We recently connected with Ashley Henderson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley , appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
My self-discipline is rooted in the morals and values imparted to me during my childhood by my grandmother and mother, and a strong belief in God. They taught me the significance of living purposefully, even in the face of challenges, detours, and unpredictable circumstances. This self-discipline has empowered me to cultivate intrinsic motivation, minimize procrastination, and effectively complete my responsibilities. I hold a strong belief in the uniqueness of each individual, and I recognize that no one can fulfill their role better than oneself. It is essential for individuals to share their perspectives and insights with the world. These principles represent a few of the affirmations I strive to embody in my daily life.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a financial analyst, author, and doctoral student, as well as a Marriage and Family Therapist based in Shreveport, Louisiana. Due to the recent passing of my daughter, Destiney, I am currently not in practice. My focus at this time is to navigate my grief in a healthy manner while also raising awareness about childhood brain cancer, specifically Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), through the foundation I created in her memory, “My Dear Destiney.” I will provide further updates as I develop this meaningful initiative.
In addition to my advocacy work, I have authored two books, “Blackberries on the Fence” and “Dear Destiney,” both available for purchase on Amazon. I believe my personal and professional goals are intertwined; I seek to remain open to learning and accessible to others. I recognize that life can present challenges, and I would like to highlight the importance of community support and daily self-care practices. These elements are crucial for maintaining mental health and overall well-being.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Upon reflection, I would characterize myself as self-determined, goal-oriented, and driven. I recognize that challenges often serve a purpose, and I believe I have been guided to this journey for a reason. It is my conviction that I have been placed in this position to fulfill my life’s assignments. I encourage future generations to remain focused and to filter out negative external opinions, as there will always be criticism. It is essential to persevere and prove doubters wrong. GET IT DONE, we do not have time, but we have today!

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I have come to recognize that my greatest challenge has often been myself. Throughout my journey, self-doubt and the impact of childhood experiences have led to feelings of inadequacy. However, I have learned that committing to personal development yields significant rewards. The loss of a child served as a poignant reminder that life can be unpredictable and that time is not a certainty. It has emphasized the importance of focusing on what can be achieved in the present moment and pursuing those goals with unwavering dedication.
I encourage everyone to embrace the process of self-expression, even when it feels uncomfortable, for one’s voice is a valuable asset. It is vital to be a beacon that allows the world to recognize our true identities.
