We recently connected with Ashley Jordan and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley , so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
Using my voice and influence to tackle topics like domestic violence or family violence can definitely be tough. Most people tend to shy away from the topic due to being involved or going through it behind closed doors. It’s tough to help others with the same problem you’re struggling with personally. Being a survivor and experiencing it myself, a lot of people think I could have left or I allowed myself to be a victim. Even thinking I’m weak because I “allowed” myself to go through that situation. I couldn’t possibly do anything to help other women. I allow my work to speak for itself. While protecting the dignity, pride and safety of my families by keeping it out of social media. I continue to show up behind-the-scenes and do the work building a reputation with shelters most people forget about or would not go near.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Ashley and I am the CEO and founder of A Girl Like Me Inc. A nonprofit organization specializing in the growth and rehabilitation of victims and survivors of domestic violence, mental health, and depression. There is no limit to the services we provide to women that are fleeing domestic situations, or trying to rebuild their lives after a domestic violence situation. My heart is in the shelters. I left my home in the middle of the night with my children while pregnant to leave my abuser and start a new life in Atlanta, Georgia. Here I was able to relocate to a domestic violence shelter four years later, I launched my nonprofit at the very same shelter. I am there once a month to assist the families however I can. We provide lunch and entertainment for the children while we pour into the moms giving them resources that will be needed once they find permanent housing and mentorship. A Girl Like Me Inc. also has a mobile thrift store. The residents are able to shop through gently use clothing and shoes for themselves as well as their family. They are also able to contact me regarding clothing once they leave the shelter and find permanent housing for anything from back to school to job interviews. I host multiple community events from workshops on how to protect yourself to weekly meet ups with my mentees to focus on their new life and how we can assist with their growth. I am currently working on my first fund raiser! An adult field day. This day will be filled with all the 90’s field day games, vendors on site, community resources and voter registration! This will be the event to be at Aug 31,2024.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The biggest thing that you can do during your journey is to listen to your intuition, Follow your heart, And be yourself! No one can tell your story like you and that is your superpower. Pay attention to what you’re good at whether it’s public speaking or having the ability to make people feel comfortable around you. Focus on growing those skills and becoming the best at it.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for like-minded individuals To partner with. This fight is not for the faint of heart. I would love a group of strong minded women that have either been through domestic violence or have experienced it on a very personal level to understand the importance of what it is that we do. I am always open to collaborations of any kind.
