We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ashley Kroeger a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
This is such a perplexing and layered question. One of the areas on inspiration I tend to draw from in this context is a quote , ” What if it worked out better than you imagined.” I like to draw into this quote because I think it’s the first step in being able to acknowledge a new stair step our opportunity that your presented with. A lot of times in the face of adversity or somewhat larger opportunities we tend to question or doubt the reason we are in the space or our capabilities or skills to successfully complete the task. When in reality, if we were not qualified nor able, the opportunity wouldn’t have presented itself in the first place. My ability to be effective in the space is learning to lean into my own skills and understanding that I have solidified and look for resources or opportunities to build connections with team players or peers that have strengths in the areas that I am weaker in, in addition to a little more experience. The combination of my skills and the advise of other seasoned peers gives me a unique perspective and approach to draw on and into for success. At the end of the day I know I will have to take a journey of countless rooms and opportunities for me, with my age, and surrounded by different calibers of professionals, business owners, companies, execs, and grander projects. I take confidence in the fact that people who looked like me set the foundation for myself and others to walk and run going forward, and learn that I have been poised and molded to handle these new levels, expands, and then become a resource for others to lean in on going forward. I opened the door to secure the next glass ceiling, and leave a new limit for those to reach for that come after me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hello All! My name is Ashley Kroeger with Kroeger Properties. I am an industry professional in the residential and commercial real estate space. I am a consultant, Realtor, Project Manager, and an upcoming Developer servicing the Atlanta and surrounding Metro-Atlanta Area. What is most special to me about real estate and my role is the opportunity of growth, the ability to work in an ever-changing industry that poses new challenges in my skillset, approach, and disposition daily. In addition to the ability to create life-long and generational impacts with any and everyone I come in contact with, in generating short & long-term wealth.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Throughout my 9+ years of experience in the real estate industry, there are 3 qualities that were instrumental in having and developing for consistent and sustained success and durability in this line of work. These 3 attributes that have shaped and continue to forge me ahead are : resiliency, resourcefulness, and humility. Resiliency is crucial because of the consistent extremes you can be poised with from client management, negotiation od deals, managing expectations and emotions to continue to develop quality customer experiences and outcomes. Resourcefulness is instrumental because you have to have any ability to think quickly, operate from a sense of consistent and constantly being proactive. Thus enabling you to build a network of resources to help enhance: collaboration, your reach, and ability to follow through with what you said in all aspects of the real estate deal. The last one is probably the most important of them all, humility. If you continue to excel in this space but are not willing to be a student, to be gracious, and grateful…. this industry will have a way of humbling you altogether. Humility and gratitude allow you to be grateful for the present, and optimistic for the progress and opportunities of the future. For young professionals who are just beginning or recently new in your journey in the real estate industry, the advice I would give you is to NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK. Foster quality relationships, put in the sweat equity to truly learn the ropes from the foundation, and watch your business grow. Get out of the mode of focusing on the end result, but fall in love with the process. Surround yourself with seasoned and newer peers to provide a balance in wisdom and perspective, and continue to dial in on those with know, like, and trust you.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have done for me is to provide a foundation of growth, and showing me first-hand the skillfulness and belief it takes to go out and forge your own way in business and life. They were avid in being entrepreneurs, and started the journey themselves in real estate. As they worked for years developing a process of systems and foundations, they then opened their own family owned real estate brokerage, Kroeger Properties. Their ability to do this taught me a few lessons: 1) Age doesn’t hinder or confine you from trying new passions. Do not let your age whether young or seasoned, hinder your willingness to try.
2) Bet on yourself.
3) Take the risk, the time and money will be invested and spent anyways…. make it worthwhile.
Their resiliency and willingness/dedication to try something new fueled me to follow in their footsteps of entrepreneurship, in addition to learn how to thrive regardless of the situations or outcomes.
