We recently connected with Ashley Olivine and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
My self-care has been everything when it comes to my effectiveness. Also, it has evolved quite a bit throughout the years. Each phase of life calls for a different twist, but the core is the same.
I focus on seven areas of living well (three are doubles):
Brain and energy
Relaxation and sleep
Nutrition
Physical movement
Relationships
Environment
Purpose and beliefs
When my kids were babies I slept in short chunks, fed them around the clock, and focused on my relationship with them as I held them for hours. Now that they’re older I sleep much longer in one chunk and we nurture our relationship during the day. Long runs pushing the double stroller and home workouts have been replaced by runs with little bikers and gym workouts. My brain power meditation sessions have become supercharged as I research and learn more. The details and proportions change, but my goal is always the same: pour into these seven cups, and thriving happens naturally.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Many years ago I suffered traumatic brain injury and post-concussive syndrome. The lingering symptoms affected every area of my life. My stress level was unbearably high and my racing thoughts were anything but motivational. I was desperate to feel better and turn my life around. Focusing on my mind, far beyond the brain injury, is what changed everything.
Now I’m a total psychology nerd, specializing in the mind-body connection, maternal well-being, child development, and thriving in all areas of life. We don’t need brain injury or a mental health diagnosis to improve brain health. It’s for anyone with a brain, similar to nutrition and exercise. We don’t need to be professional athletes to optimize health and well-being with the foods we eat and our level of physical activity, so why would we wait for a mental health crisis to focus on brain health? Let’s optimize now, and benefit in all areas of life from relationships to careers, and so much more!
As a coach and educator, I work one-on-one with clients and provide life-changing information based on research and experience. However, I’m not your typical psychologist. That’s because I believe in magic, the power of the brain to change everything. We all have this magical power within us, we simply have to learn how to unlock it. My role is to guide others to discover what works best for them and use it to completely change their lives. Coming soon, I will be releasing a brand new program, an online course, with all my best brainpower hacks to thrive in health and life.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Awareness, curiosity, and drive are the three big ones that come to mind. I had to take a deep, honest look at myself, my decisions, and what I wanted. I became aware of all the micro-connections that led to my reality and dropped the self-judgment. Instead of shaming myself about all the things I didn’t like, I had to ask myself what I wanted and what I could do to help myself. Then I actually made it happen, even when it was hard, and completely crazy to believe in the possibility. The best advice I can give is to try. Remember that it all starts with the brain. Take care of and optimize your brain health and your life will change.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is a mother who has sacrificed immeasurable amounts of herself for her family. Stress, racing thoughts, and mom guilt keep her up at night, even after the rest of the house is asleep. She wants to use her unique gifts and genius to do something meaningful but doesn’t believe that’s possible because she feels buried under piles of laundry, dishes, mom responsibilities, and all the other stuff on her ever-growing list. Spoiler alert: she can and she will. I believe in her, and soon, she will believe in herself, too. Deep down, she already knows she has what it takes, she just isn’t aware of it yet.
