We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ashley Snellen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ashley, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I’m still searching for my purpose, as I believe it’s ever evolving. However, I fell in love with aesthetics about 19 years ago and that has been my passion ever since.
I am a Family Nurse Practitioner in Louisville, KY, and after working in family practice for only three years, the burn out was starting to set in. I had read an article about a Nurse Practitioner in Arizona who started her own practice; a medical spa. At the time there was nothing like this in Kentucky. So why not give it a try? So in 2006, I opened the first Nurse Practitioner owned med spa in Louisville. Over the last 18 years my role as business owner, operator, marketing director, janitor, etc.. has certainly changed. My love for medical aesthetics has not and it’s the driving force behind my new purpose – education.
I started training for Allergan about 8 years ago and then this led to me doing private trainings. I opened a training facility 2 years ago, Partners In Aesthetics LLC, where I hold training courses on injectables for new and experienced aesthetic injectors. I have fallen in love with educating and sharing my passion for the aesthetic business. So, I guess you can say my purpose for now is mentoring and teaching clinicians who want to get into the aesthetic world. I so wish there was all the resources and education 19 years ago when I was learning. I want to help create better injectors. It’s an art but it is a medical treatment as well.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my journey as a new business owner/operator one of the most impactful things is the support I received form my family. My oldest child was only a year old when I started my business and made this career change. I couldn’t have done it without the support from my husband and parents. Continuing to self educate and invest in myself is another impactful part of this journey. You should attend conferences, attend courses, and never stop learning about your craft. This will set you apart from your competition. I was once told the day you stop learning is the day you start to wither, if you stay green (continue learning) then you’ll always grow.
