We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ashlynn Bauman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ashlynn, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I believe my work ethic comes from many places, but a big part of it comes from growing up seeing what hard work truly looks like. My parents showed me that nothing in life is handed to you, and that lesson stuck. I’ve always been goal-driven and understand that nothing changes if you don’t put in the effort. Showing up every day, giving your best, and staying consistent are essential. Dedication is key—and of course, loving what I do makes it that much easier to give it my all.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a hairstylist at Salon 152 in the Northland, and I love helping my clients feel confident and beautiful! I enjoy weddings, doing both hair and makeup, as well as coloring, highlighting, and cuts in the salon. My favorite part of my career is building lasting relationships with my clients and being a part of their special moments. Honestly, sometimes I still can’t believe how lucky I am to get to do what I love every day!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are consistency, creativity, and building relationships. Consistency has taught me that showing up every day, even when it’s hard, is what builds trust and growth. Creativity allows me to approach every client and style with a fresh perspective, making each experience unique. And building relationships has been key—not just with clients, but with colleagues and mentors—because connection is what helps me continue to build my business!
For those early in their journey, my advice is to stay disciplined and continue showing up every day while investing in your education. Take every opportunity to learn from others and truly listen to your clients and the people around you. A huge part of the beauty industry is how you make people feel—clients may forget the details, but they will always remember how you made them feel. Making each client feel valued and special is what builds lasting relationships and long-term success!

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The people who have been most helpful in my journey are those who believed in me before I fully believed in myself. My mom has been an incredible source of support throughout my entire career—always there to listen, encourage me, and help me through moments of overwhelm. Her constant support has meant more to me than I can put into words.
I’ve also been incredibly fortunate to learn from mentors and fellow stylists within the industry who are always willing to share their knowledge, offer guidance, and encourage growth. I’m especially grateful to work alongside stylists with over 30 years of experience, who continue to push me to improve while generously offering their insight and support. Surrounding myself with people who challenge and uplift me has been essential to both my personal and professional development.
