We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Asia Howard a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Asia, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
In recent years I have relied more on the 3 F’s to fight: Faith, Family and Friends. I know that sounds cliche but they have all helped me with acknowledging that I have a problem and with help I can overcome. My faith has shown me that life isn’t all about me and my woes and if I focus on helping others I’ll look at my problems less, but don’t totally neglect my own problems either. And also it really is a battle in the mind. You have to replace those negative thoughts with the positive ones and see the good in the situation. My family gives me a reason to fight every day. I love the memories we have together and I can’t wait to make new ones. And finally my friends they eat with me, they support me and I know they are all a phone call away when I need a listening ear and a prayer.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a baker that has loved it from an early age. I have been in the kitchen since I was 4 trying to learn everything that I can. I have always loved to try new cooking/baking techniques. The special part of being a confectionary baker is the fact that people allow me to be apart of there special occasions. I get to bring their ideas to life via cakes and sweet treats. And the smiles on their face is priceless when they see the final product. I am just starting out but it’s been my passion for years. I strive to provide quality products and services. I offer flash sales from time to time and I look forward to meeting you in person at future pop up shops.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have been impactful on my journey are my attention to detail, strong communication and i preform well under pressure. I try to ask enough questions to get clarity and understanding the vision. It’s putting in the final details that give me a rush of excitement.
Networking will help you a lot. You may meet people that will help you improve on your craft or just be able to offer sound advice and wisdom.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I think it’s better to be well rounded because sometimes in learning new things it can help add to my strengths. I personally love trying new things which causes me to buy supplies that I may only need in that one moment. But lo and behold they end up being used for other projects.
