We were lucky to catch up with Asli Ozok recently and have shared our conversation below.
Asli, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I draw inspiration from various sources, including my observations of people and events, and the world agenda. My artistic journey reflects the influence of the cities I have lived in, such as London,New York, Spain and Istanbul which have liberated as an artist. My work often incorporates elements of art history, mythology, and contemporary issues, with a focus on themes like consumerism, gender perceptions, and the impact of the modern world on spiritual energies. I use of surrealism in my sculptures reflects contemporary issues by exploring themes of spiritual unification and the shared human experience during the pandemic. My sculptures, which combine human body parts in a gender-neutral form, symbolize the global consciousness and the uncanny state experienced during the pandemic. This approach highlights the interconnectedness of humanity, transcending traditional boundaries of identity and emphasizing unity amidst global challenges
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I love working in my studio on my paintings and sculptures. Bronze is a great material that excites me to work with!
My last surrealism series features ethereal creatures made from myth and dreams, represented through both painting and bronze sculpture. These works explore the uncanny and paranormal, particularly influenced by the global consciousness during the pandemic. The series emphasizes spiritual unification, with sculpted creatures that amalgamate human body parts without gender classification. My Monochrome painting series complements this by using black and white portraits to remove skin pigmentation, reflecting on the shared human experience during social and political hardships.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
while talent is an important asset for creative individuals, it is the combination of hard work, stability, determination, curiosity, and passion that truly leads to success. Embracing these qualities can help unlock the full potential of one’s creative abilities, paving the way for meaningful achievements and contributions to the world.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
The debate on whether creative individuals should focus on their strengths or improve their weaknesses is multifaceted. Some argue that focusing on strengths leads to greater fulfillment and productivity, as it allows individuals to excel in areas they are passionate about and naturally skilled in. This approach can lead to higher satisfaction and less stress, as individuals engage in tasks that energize them and I believe so.
However, the choice may depend on personal goals and the context in which an individual operates.
