Meet Aslyn Oestreich

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Aslyn Oestreich. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Aslyn, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

I don’t know if any artist can truly say they’ve completely overcome imposter syndrome, but I have found ways to lessen it! I don’t look at every other photographers work and that makes a huge difference for me. I have some photographers that I am a complete fangirl for that I love looking at their work, but it’s not to try and get ideas for my own work. It’s just because I love them. once you stop trying to compare yourself to the very over saturated and overwhelming pool of other photographers, you find joy in your own work. A lot of overcoming it also comes with time and age. I’ve been doing photography for a long time now and I’ve seen a lot of my fellow photographers ups and downs. Everyone goes through phases and seeing that even other photographers do as well, it makes yours feel more normal.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Hi there, my name is Aslyn and I’m a Michigan photographer. I love doing portraits with a heavy influence from nature and I like working with everyone. I am privileged to be able to be budget friendly because I believe everyone deserves to have great photos. We’ve got one life to live and they all deserve to be documented.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Being willing to try new things and fail had helped me immensely. Getting better requires risk and a bit of bravery, so it’s always worth the shot!

Empathy has allowed me to connect with people and offer opportunities that a lot of times get overlooked.

Being true to myself and my art and not following editing trends has allowed me to make a cohesive and timeless body of work.

Definitely find your personal style and stick with it! Don’t look at what everyone else is doing. The art you make might be for clients, but it’s also an expression of yourself. Create or get involved with your community! Meet new people, help out new businesses, take the offers that are a little out of the box!

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I am! I’m currently looking to photograph people in their home gardens or farms or community garden spaces! If you want to collaborate with me, just send me an email at aslyn.oestreich@gmail.com and let’s work together!
