We recently connected with Atasha Kelley-Harris and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Atasha, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I inherited my strong work ethic from all those who raised me – both my parents and both sets of grandparents and their parents’ parents – My Ancestors.
They were ALL diligent workers who worked with a sense of purpose and pride.
This same spirit was instilled in me at a young age.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As the founder of a nonprofit organization, I am fortunate to work on behalf of children, youth, and families – primarily those impacted by the foster care and justice systems, as well as other vulnerable populations.
For three decades, I have dedicated my career to supporting youth and families in need.
At Family Roots for Life, Inc.®, we’re committed to helping youth and young adults by teaching them life skills, offering mentorships and family finding and support services.
We’re working to better prepare youth as they transition into adulthood – to ensure they have the skills and supports needed to thrive self-sufficiently.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey have been (1) my strong faith – needed to push through each day, to keep going despite any barriers, and to inspire others along the way; (2) my positive attitude – which provides the needed hope and optimism to remain steadfast even through uncertainty; and (3) my strong work ethic which allows me to work long days and nights with determination to complete every goal and each new project.
The primary advice I have for those early in their career would be to make sure to have a strong support system, those willing to encourage you through the tough times.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was to be present. They were married 40 years before my dear sweet mother passed away, now 15 years ago. Their steady presence and active involvement in mine and my older sister’s lives meant the world to me.
Their guidance, support, protection, and continual positive encouragement were the driving forces which enabled my success – academically, professionally, relationally in marriage, as a parent, and as a friend.
Their positive influence with marriage and family, in their careers, and family-orientedness has served as both the impetus and foundation for the development of our nonprofit organization Family Roots for Life, Inc.®.
