We recently connected with Atiya Spencer and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Atiya, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity comes from wanting to live a happier life. I’ve found that it makes me happy to help and give to others, which is my calling in life. I’ve always had the feeling of empathy and compassion for others who was underserved or dealing with life traumas. I’ve always found myself being an advocate for others, giving them a sense of community when they feel alone.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Atiya K. Spencer and a native of Brooklyn, NY. I am a Certified Life Coach, Mentor, Mental Health Professional and the owner of A.K.S Coaching. I also spend my time aiming to alleviating world hungry and poverty while providing transitional services to those underserved and unsheltered. What’s special about AKS coaching is that I provide empowerment base life coaching, free mentoring services with the goal to build confidence, self love, personal development, good character, and severing toxic relationships by overcoming adversities one obstacle at a time.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For me, the three qualities, skills or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey is my life experiences, education, and resilience. I’ve endured a lot of adversities in my life that I’ve overcame and turned it into a business to help others whom may have experienced similar traumas which speaks to my resilience. I also attended life coaching school and therapy to find my niche as well as developing my interpersonal skills. My advice to others to best develop or improve on these skills is to not be afraid to share your story because you never know who you can help by doing so, seek therapy because it will help you become a better coach and not take on your clients problems, and lastly not to be ashamed of what you’ve endured but to be proud of how far you’ve come.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The book that played an important role in my development is “So Much To Unlearn” by Maui the Writer. Some impactful nuggets of wisdom I learned is that I am worthy and deserving of love despite what I’ve been through, set boundaries for yourself without feeling sorry, and don’t attach yourself to things that doesn’t align with your purpose.
