We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yi-Han ( Audrey ) Chou. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Audrey below.
Audrey , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity through different ways, for example, by trying to see more shows, looking at other people’s work, going to exhibitions, exchanging ideas, and discussing with my friends, etc. I also love to do research and reading, which keeps my brain active with different thoughts and ideas.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am currently a Master’s student at NYU, studying interactive telecommunications. I am mostly interested in the research and creation bridging performance and technology, and I hope to experiment and build a body of work during my time in this program.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think the most important qualities that I have, which have been helpful skills for me, are the ability to identify and know what kind of vision I have for my creations, not being afraid of failure, and also being able to move on with the motivation of becoming better every single time. I believe that the best thing to do is to take some time to try different kinds of things and identify what is important for you as an artist, entrepreneur, and human being.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I believe it depends on your goal. Being well-rounded is beneficial, but it serves a purpose. You may also need to enhance your communication skills to interact effectively with diverse groups of people, especially if you aspire to a leadership role, seek to create something multifaceted, or wish to broaden your interests beyond your main focus.
Focusing solely on one strong skill can also be advantageous. It allows for greater concentration, more time with friends, and the opportunity to stand out with your expertise. However, it carries risks, particularly if you lose your job that relies solely on that strength. It’s possible to overlook other important aspects when you have a narrow perspective.
I’ve gathered insights from various industry professionals, and each has different perspectives. Personally, I prefer being well-rounded because I enjoy collaboration. Ultimately, it all comes down to personal choice and goals; there are no right or wrong answers in the decisions we make.
