Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Audrey Glass. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Audrey, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
Honestly, it’s come from my mom. She’s shown me to always see the best in every situation and that positivity attracts positivity. Focusing on the negative will make you spiral and only make things worse. However, the second you focus on the positive side of things, you find solutions to your problems and new doors open. Once you experience the power of optimism, there’s no going back!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
In 2015, I ventured into the world of permanent makeup as a microblading artist. I quickly built a large audience on social media and therefor, a large roster of clients. I have since added faux freckles and nano brows to my curriculum.
I am extremely grateful that I get to do something I am so passionate about for a living and it has allowed me to meet people from all walks of life. Making clients feel their best has been beyond rewarding. From simply making their beauty routine easier by having beautiful brows 24/7 to making them feel like themselves again after losing their brows to alopecia, chemotherapy, scaring or other skin conditions, it’s given me a purpose.
As an artist, the ongoing challenge of staying up to date with new techniques, services and products keeps me on my toes. There is such a creativity to it that is so unique from service to service and client to client. I can’t get enough of it!
My passion has led me to teaching and I now offer mentorship to existing PMU artists in need of guidance and education as well as coaching calls.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First and foremost, patience and perseverance. Permanent makeup is not something that you learn overnight and the learning curve is very real and humbling. It’s so easy to get discouraged by difficult transformations or poor results but these are crucial to figure out what went wrong, how to fix the issue and how to avoid repeating it.
Secondly, having a makeup background made it much easier for me to get started in the PMU industry as a I already had an great understanding of eyebrow shapes and how to properly transform a brow to better enhance someone’s features.
Lastly, understanding skin is a must. Skin types, skin conditions, skincare products and skincare treatments as well as lifestyle, all dictates how to proceed with your services and knowing which one is best for your client and will provide ideal long term results.
My biggest advice is to give it your all. Tattooing someone’s face is a big deal and should not be taken lightly. Practice is everything and you want to ensure that you give your 100% to each and every client. In an ever growing industry such as PMU, you can never be too educated. Take courses, learn new techniques, meet other artists and build a community where you can learn and find support in moments of doubt.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
I think like many other small business owners and artists, I am really struggling with keeping up with social media.
The algorithm isn’t in favor of smaller accounts and it’s really hard to get my work seen by my followers.
I try to stay up to date with the ever changing requirements to stand out on platforms and be more consistent but in all honesty, it’s hard. I already put so much work into my craft and running my business, that being a full time creator on top of it all is not always easy. I’m trying to incorporate content creating into my schedule so it doesn’t feel so daunting and try to find my angle on things to stand out from my peers.
