Meet Audrey Wang

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Audrey Wang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Audrey, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
This has been a long journey, but I finally realized that my self-worth isn’t determined by being flawless, but rather by how I handle setbacks. It’s easy to get caught up in the desire for immediate success, but the process itself is as valuable, if not more so. This change in perspective allowed me to take pride in my commitment and hard work, irrespective of the immediate outcomes. It contributed significantly to my self-esteem, as I came to realize that it’s not just the destination but also the journey that defines who I am.

Each time I encountered mistakes or failures, I made a conscious effort to analyze what went wrong, identify areas for improvement, and use those experiences as stepping stones for growth. This approach transformed my perspective on mistakes, helping me to understand that they were not reflections of my inadequacy but opportunities to learn, adapt, and come back stronger. Over time, this mindset shift has been fundamental in building my resilience, instead of viewing failure as a dead-end, it became a detour on the road to success.

Why is it that so many of us are afraid to fail? And, more importantly, how can we discover the beauty hidden within failure itself? We worry about what others might think, about falling short of expectations, and about the potential consequences of our missteps. We view failure as a blemish on our character rather than a natural part of the human experience.

Failure, in truth, is a remarkable teacher—an enlightening guide on our journey toward self-discovery. It is through failure that we gain wisdom, humility, and a deeper understanding of ourselves. When we fear failure, we confine ourselves within a self-imposed prison. We limit our growth and deny ourselves the joy of exploration and experimentation. But what if we were to embrace failure with open arms? What if we were to recognize that failure is not an indictment of our worth, but an opportunity for growth and transformation? Failure should be celebrated—it’s not a setback, but a stepping stone towards greatness, a catalyst for innovation, resilience, and breakthroughs!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Girls Education Program (GEP)
Our Girls Education Program (GEP) empowers girls in poverty by keeping them in school. By providing an education to poor girls, we can break the cycle of poverty and child marriage and get girls onto the path to success. Working with families and communities, we can build a new understanding of the potential for educated girls, and help transform the way entire regions think about poor girls. We believe that educating and empowering girls in poverty is the best investment anyone can make to fight injustice and poverty.

Speak Up currently sponsors the education of 1,570 girls in 35 villages and urban communities in the Khulna area of western Bangladesh. These girls are predominantly Dalits, descendants of the Hindu untouchables, or very poor Muslim girls. They are among the poorest and most marginalized people in an already impoverished country. To date, 915 GEP girls have monthly sponsors, and we are looking for many more to join the Sponsorship Team.

Sponsors contribute $40 per month to sponsor one girl’s education, including daily tutoring, books and school supplies, and monthly educational seminars. Since these girls come from villages where women previously did not finish their education or gain outside employment, our GEP helps girls navigate the difficult path to academic success: staying in school, standing against child marriage, and giving each girl a step-by-step plan for achieving her long-term dream. Hundreds of girls dream of becoming teachers and nurses and doctors and more, hoping to serve their impoverished communities one day. The GEP empowers them to reach that dream.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, I believe these are the three qualities the were most impactful:

Emotional Intelligence:
Developing a deep understanding of emotional intelligence has been instrumental in my coaching journey. It has allowed me to connect with clients on a profound level, empathize with their struggles, and help them harness their emotions for personal growth. My advice for those early in their journey is to continually work on self-awareness, empathy, and interpersonal skills. These can be developed through self-reflection, seeking feedback, and practicing active listening.

Expertise in Strengths-Based Approaches:
Understanding and leveraging a person’s strengths, rather than focusing solely on weaknesses, is a powerful approach for personal and professional development. Early in your journey, invest time in learning about various strengths assessment tools and methodologies. Become proficient in helping yourself and others identify and maximize their unique strengths.

Continuous Learning and Adaptability:
The field of coaching is dynamic, and what works for one client may not work for another. Being open to continuous learning and adaptation is crucial. Stay updated with the latest research, coaching techniques, and personal development strategies. Seek mentorship or peer support to refine your skills. My advice is to never stop seeking opportunities for professional growth and staying adaptable in an ever-evolving field.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
