Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Audrey Webb. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Audrey, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
As an author, it’s easy to feel stuck and unable to come up with new ideas. The concept for my first book came to me in a dream over a decade ago, a story about a young woman who is transported to a fantastical parallel universe. I held onto that idea for many years before I finally put it into words, and Line Between Two Worlds was born. Fortunately, after planning and dwelling on that story for so long, the words and plot flowed out of me naturally.
The real challenge came when I started working on the second book in the Transversal Series. As an intense plotter, I always outline my books before I begin writing. That means there is a period where I need to be full of ideas all at once, and I found myself at a complete standstill. The second book took much longer to craft, but in that process, I discovered my secret to inspiration: stories. Reading other books, listening to music, watching movies, and diving into comics all help me generate ideas. I feed off other people’s creativity, and suddenly the ideas begin to pour like a wellspring.
Whenever I’m feeling stuck, I take a step back to fuel my mind. After all, you must fill your own cup before you can begin to pour.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
From childhood, I have always loved stories and the emotions they can evoke. I remember writing short stories as a kid and excitedly showing them to my parents, expressing my desire to one day be the author of a real book. Even years later, it remained a far-off dream. One day, while meeting someone new and sharing my dreams, I mentioned wanting to write a book someday. She responded, “That someday is closer than you think.” I started writing Line Between Two Worlds that very night. I am forever grateful to that woman for giving me the push I needed to begin.
It took two years from start to finish, but I finally self-published the first book in the Transversal Series on Amazon. In addition to writing, I have a love for art and design, so I used my skills to create my own book cover, as well as an illustrated special edition of the book.
I live in Arizona with my husband and two dogs, where I left my full-time job to focus on being a wife and pursuing my passion for writing. When I’m not working on my next book, you’ll find me listening to audiobooks while tackling house projects, enjoying musicals, or playing video games (especially the ones with amazing stories). On Sundays, I’m at church, giving God all the glory for any success I may find.
Book Two in my series, Torn Between Two Hearts, will be coming out this summer, followed by a novella. I’m so excited to continue this journey. Sales can be challenging as a self-published author, but the love I receive from readers and their excitement to hear the rest of my story make it all the more worthwhile.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three words that came to mind are: passion, resilience, and excellence.
You have to love your own story. When you first begin writing, no one loves your story as much as you do, so you need to be filled with a drive and passion that pushes you not only to start writing, but to finish it. Too many books never see the light of day because the author had an idea but not the passion. Create characters who become your children, stories that become your world, and pour your heart onto the pages to give your book the care it deserves.
Being an author within the fiction book lover community is tough—especially when you’re doing all your own marketing. Trying to sell yourself and your writing to a world that isn’t listening can be incredibly disheartening, especially when this book is your passion. That’s why you need ironclad resilience to endure the struggles that come with it. Push yourself to stay strong when you receive negative feedback, and use it to grow. Keep marketing your book, even when you feel unseen, because someday someone will fall in love with the stories you have to tell.
And finally, always strive for excellence. No one is perfect, and very rarely is writing perfect. First drafts are called rough for a reason. But you should always be working to improve. Perfect your craft. Take classes to sharpen your skills. Study the books you love and analyze what they do well. Rewrite and edit your book until it’s something you can proudly share. Invest in an editor and a cover artist who can showcase your book in its best light. Never settle or give up. Always put your best foot forward.
How would you describe your ideal client?
Currently, my two books are targeted toward the New Adult audience, though they can also appeal to both Young Adult and Adult readers.
Young Adult books typically feature teenage protagonists and are aimed at readers between the ages of 13 and 17.
Adult fiction is written for adults aged 18 and up and often includes more mature themes.
New Adult, on the other hand, focuses on that in-between stage. These stories are generally geared toward readers between 18 and 29.
Since my books feature adult characters, labeling them as Young Adult didn’t feel quite right. However, because I keep all romance closed-door, limiting them strictly to the Adult category didn’t fit either. So I’ve found my home in the New Adult space, with crossover appeal for both Young Adult and Adult audiences.
If you love romance and fantasy, my books are right up your alley. I also enjoy sci-fi, paranormal, and dystopian stories, all with a focus on that sweet, sweet romance. Keep an eye out for future books that branch into those genres as well. I’m also a fan of psychological twists, so one day you may find me dipping my toes into the thriller genre. Until then, you might notice a darker edge in some of my stories, just enough depth to leave you lying in bed, rethinking the ending long after you’ve turned the last page.
