We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aughbar. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aughbar below.
Aughbar, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being the only one in the room who looks like me can feel like stepping into uncharted territory. As a mixed Thai and Cuban American, it’s a chance to embrace a unique perspective that few get to see. I connect with others on a deeper level, letting my vision guide me. There’s something powerful about using my background as a tool to craft stories that resonate, revealing truths that often go unnoticed.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a filmmaker and director, deeply passionate about storytelling that highlights diverse experiences. My journey as a mixed Thai and Cuban American has shaped my artistic vision, inspiring me to create films that challenge stereotypes and promote authentic representation.
What excites me most is the ability to craft narratives that resonate with audiences on a personal level. I aim to bring stories to life that reflect the complexities of our world, using my unique perspective as a driving force.
Currently, I’m focused on my student film, The Humming Grows, which explores themes of redemption, family, and the struggle for identity. It’s an exciting project that allows me to showcase the beauty and depth of mixed backgrounds in genre storytelling.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three key qualities that have shaped my journey are adaptability, empathy, and a passion for storytelling. Adaptability helps you navigate unexpected challenges, while empathy fosters deeper connections with diverse audiences. A genuine passion for storytelling drives my work; immersing yourself in various stories and writing can clarify your unique voice. For those starting out, focus on these qualities, surround yourself with inspiring people, and embrace your journey—it’s what makes your story special!
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
One book that has played a significant role in my development is *Hagakure*. This ancient text, written by Yamamoto Tsunetomo, offers profound insights into the samurai way of life and philosophy. A few of the most impactful nuggets of wisdom include the importance of living in the present moment, embracing humility, and understanding the value of loyalty and honor. The idea that true strength lies in knowing when to act decisively and when to remain calm resonates deeply with me, reminding me to balance passion with thoughtful reflection in my creative journey.
