Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Austin Galante. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Austin , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Well, I don’t think I have a “purpose” per se. But over the years I have figured out things that I like to do and things that I don’t like to do. I’ve tried a lot of things. But…even if something isn’t my favorite thing to do; sometimes I still learn to do it in order to help achieve other goals. For instance, I’m a film editor. It’s not my favorite part of the film making process, but it gets me to an end goal, and over the years, I’ve learned to enjoy some things about it. I do find some enjoyment in being able to tell the story the way I want it told and not relying on someone else to hopefully cut the footage the way I saw it in my head.
So I wear a lot of hats. I don’t have one purpose. I like making art. I’ve been making feature films for about 3 years. Before that I did a lot of the individual things that are used to make a movie. Teaching myself to do all the elements in film making, graphic design, music productions, wood working, acting, directing, writing, wardrobe and costumes, set design, lighting, casting, sound, camera, editing, location scouting, etc. allows me to make a film without hitting major road blocks. I do find that making films is satisfying because I get to perform all these individual areas of art. So I’m never bored.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I started out poor. I moved around a lot. I’ve gotten to experience a great many things. I’ve lived in my car, in peoples basements, couches, a crack house, in other countries, numerous cities around America. I’m at a point now where I have a few resources and I can use them to make my art. I’ve spent a several decades working on my crafts and a decade building my studios.
I just released a movie called Suite Killing Machines. It’s is more or less a low budget art film. I just finished filming a much higher budget movie called Sanguine Teeth on a Driftless Road; which will be released in the fall of 2025.
I started in music. I was in a band for a long time and then I started producing and engineering music. I also started shooting music videos, which is how I got into film making. I have had the pleasure of producing tracks which feature artists such as Slim Kid Tre of Pharcyde, Cee Lo Green, #0 of Slipknot, Rick Ross, Snoop Dogg, KRS-ONE and many others. Some of these tracks I have used and will use in the movies I am making. It’s a great feeling to be able to create the music for a story I have written, filmed and edited. The whole thing really feels like a cohesive piece of art that I get to extract from my mind. I get to write songs before the filming has even started and make that scene around that song and in other cases I get to have an edited scene and make music to go with the film. So I really get to play around and have fun with it.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience is the number one skill if you aren’t rich. If you can’t just throw money at your problems, then you have to have some really thick skin and the will to keep getting rejected.
For myself personally, number two is probably the ability to teach myself and learn new skills.
And again for myself, being able to learn a wide variety of skills. That isn’t to say that is the way everyone will be successful. Some people will do better learning a couple skills and getting really good at those couple things. I personally find it more enjoyable to do a wider variety to things. It’s also very freeing for me to be able to create a project from start to finish. I definitely do enjoy working with other people on things. It’s just nice to know that if I need to, I can get the job done one way or another.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The same obstacles that almost every film maker faces…finding more money to make a movie. I’m currently seeking grants and other funding for making a bigger movie to show other funders what I can do on my own.
If I can do this on my own with very little money, a bigger budget would allow some of the bigger ideas to come to life.
