We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Austin Q. Nguyen, MD. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Nguyen below.
Hi Dr. Nguyen, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from both my family and my faith. Growing up, I watched my grandparents and parents work incredibly hard after coming to this country with very little. My grandfather built a church and served his community, and my grandmother started her own sewing business to support her twelve children. Being around that environment from a young age, helping my family and seeing their discipline and sacrifice really shaped how I view hard work and responsibility.
My faith is also a big part of it. A verse that guides me is Colossians 3:23–24: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” This perspective reminds me to approach everything I do whether it’s taking care of patients, research, or mentoring students with purpose and excellence, not for recognition, but because it’s ultimately an opportunity to serve.
At the end of the day, my work ethic comes from wanting to honor both the sacrifices my family made and the calling I feel through my faith to give my best in everything I do.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My professional path has really been shaped by both my training in medicine and my passion for education. I’m currently an orthopedic surgery resident physician at Houston Methodist Hospital, with plans to pursue additional fellowship training to sub-specialize in spine surgery. What drew me to orthopedics was the hands-on nature of the field and the ability to make a direct impact on patients’ function and quality of life.
At the same time, I’ve always been passionate about mentorship. That led me to co-found Medical School Partners (MSP) LLC, where we support students from pre-med all the way through medical school and even into residency. It has been incredibly rewarding to help people at different stages of training navigate what can be a very challenging and isolating path.
More recently, I’ve also taken on a role as a division manager with SnapOrtho, where we’re building tools to make learning orthopedics more accessible and efficient. As training gets busier and more demanding, we’re focused on helping learners study smarter and gain early exposure to the field.
Across everything I do, the common theme is mentorship and education—finding ways to support others and help them succeed in their medical journey. I am very fortunate to have amazing mentors in my life who have guided me through many life stages and continue to inspire me to help others.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I think these three things have been especially impactful in my journey: discipline, mentorship, and having a strong foundation.
First, discipline has been essential. Medicine is a long road with a lot of delayed gratification, and there’s no substitute for consistently showing up whether that’s studying, preparing for cases, or staying late and putting in the extra time when no one is watching. For those early in their journey, I’d say focus on building strong daily habits. You don’t need to be perfect, but consistency over time is what really moves the needle.
Second, mentorship has played a huge role in shaping my path. At every stage, I’ve had people ahead of me who took the time to guide me and invest in me. That’s something I’ve tried to carry forward through my work with MSP and SnapOrtho creating that same sense of support for others. My advice would be to seek out mentors intentionally, be open to feedback, and also look for ways to support those coming behind you.
Finally, my faith has been my anchor through it all. Knowing that the victory has already been won through Christ’s love and sacrifice on the cross gives me a sense of peace and perspective, regardless of everyday challenges. It reminds me that my purpose isn’t tied to any one result or achievement, but to being faithful in stewarding what the Lord has provided and surrendering to His plan for my life. For anyone early in their journey, I think having something that grounds you, something bigger than yourself, is incredibly important. For me, trusting in God’s perfect and pleasing will has allowed me to move forward with confidence, even in uncertain moments.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
For Medical School Partners (MSP), our ideal client is really anyone pursuing medical training at any stage, whether that’s pre-med, medical school, or even residency, who is looking to improve their study strategies or simply wants additional support. Medicine is a long and demanding journey, and we truly believe everyone can benefit from a helping hand along the way.
A big part of what inspired MSP was our own experience. Both my co-founder, Kailash Panchapakesan, and I relied heavily on each other and on the support of those around us throughout our training. That sense of shared effort and accountability made a huge difference for us, and we wanted to create that same environment for others. So, the ideal MSP student is someone who is motivated, open to guidance, and willing to invest in their growth. We will meet them wherever they are and help them move forward!
For SnapOrtho, our ideal audience is anyone interested in the field of orthopedics. One of the biggest challenges in medical education is that exposure to orthopedics can be limited, and the learning curve can be steep. Our goal is to make that process more accessible and approachable. Whether someone is just starting to explore the field or already committed to it, we want to provide tools that help them learn more efficiently such as reading X-rays, understanding key concepts, and building a strong foundation early on.
At the end of the day, both MSP and SnapOrtho are built for learners who are looking to grow and are willing to put in the work! We are just here to help guide and support them along the way.
