We recently connected with Autumn D and have shared our conversation below.
Autumn, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
I had to learn to trust myself, and my capabilities, focus on my goals, and stay away from negative opinions. Even if that meant cutting negative people out of my life. By having tunnel vision in a sense, and tuning out the noise of the nay-sayers, I was free to create music on my terms. Also, I surrounded myself with a supportive network of friends and mentors who provided the encouragement I needed to stay motivated. And having haters and naysayers wasn’t always bad because I often used it as fuel to prove doubters wrong.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a singer and songwriter who specializes in a musical fusion of Country/R&B/HipHop. I’m originally from North Carolina and growing up in the South, I’ve been influenced by all different styles of music. My father introduced me to country which is his favorite genre, my mother loved Motown, my sister and I listened to a lot of Hip Hop and I sang in the church. What I think is most exciting and special about my music is how I’ve created a sound that combines all these musical influences. Because of this, I’ve had my music play on both urban and country music stations like Choice FM 92.1 and CMR Nashville which is the #1 Country radio station in Europe. Next, I’ll be singing the National Anthem at the Charlotte Hornets game on January 31st and in Nashville, TN in March. I’m also preparing to perform at music festivals this summer so stay tuned.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I think my film degree equipped me with a strong understanding of storytelling and production, allowing me to write and direct my music videos. Being a songwriter enabled me to convey my own emotions and experiences through lyrics and melodies. And my proficiency in using social media serves as a powerful tool for self-promotion as well as creating a fan base.
My advice would be to utilize social media to the fullest because that’s the best way to promote your music and build a fan base. It’s also great for networking and finding opportunities whether that be for performing or finding a team to help you develop as an artist on your journey.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
All my life, my parents owned and operated mental health businesses. My parents helped me learned early the importance of being business savy and the value of having your own business. This has definitely helped me in launching my music career where resilence and resourcefulness are crucial traits to hanging in there. My parents never gave up and neither will I.
