Meet Autumn Glomani

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Autumn Glomani. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Autumn , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Graphic Design is an industry where you are constantly behind a screen whether it’s designing on your desktop, or social media managing on your mobile phone. It’s very easy to get creator’s block or burnout. To avoid this, I make sure to manage my time wisely so that I have time to get outside and check out new restaurants, parks, or museums. New environments help with inspiration. Looking at the same four walls or seeing the office from the same point of view is simply uninspiring. Whenever I find myself getting a tad uninspired or board, I change my scenery. I may work from a coffee shop one day, a co-working space the next or, simply move my desk to a different part of the office. You’d be surprised, it doesn’t take a ton of effort to give yourself a little jump start. Depending on how severe your burnout is, you may have to re-focus your attention away from design and focus on what inspires you. Once you find out what inspires you, do more of it. By doing so you’ll jump start your creativity and quickly find out how much you actually miss design. My outlet is music, so I built a community around that.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Our goal at Glomani Graphics is to create eye-catching designs that are not only pleasing to look at but can also help our clients distinguish themselves from their competition. If you enjoy using your creativity and making things, you may enjoy working as a graphic designer, as this is a large part of their jobs. We have self-paced beginner friendly courses coming soon!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Many different industries have a need for graphic designers. This means that as a graphic designer, there are many opportunities to enter a field that interests you. Some examples of industries that need graphic designers include sports, entertainment, business, marketing and politics. You can also switch between different industries throughout your career, giving you more variety in your professional life. Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all. Just be consistent in whatever industry you’re passionate about.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Working with numerous clients at any one time, keeping track of deadlines, on top of balancing any number of personal projects and working to build your skills can all take a toll on your mental health and wellbeing. What so many of us overlook when starting our graphic design careers is putting into place processes and systems to deal with stress and help us to maintain good mental health. The good news is that if you’re starting to feel overwhelmed, it’s never too late to make positive changes in your life to reduce stress and make things easier! Each of us will get stressed by different things. For some, it may be spending long hours in front of a screen, and for others, it might be worrying about how much time is being spent on projects. Whatever it is for you, you need to identify it. The first step to mitigating stress in your work life is to actually figure out what the catalyst of stress is, when it happens, and how badly it affects you. As simple as it may sound, putting a system in place to help you stay more organized can both help to remove stress from your life, and also be more productive when working. For example, I use an app called Todoist to help me keep track of all the tasks and deadlines that I have to handle, breaking them down into individual client and importance level. It’s so important that you have a system in place that works for you. Spend a bit of time testing out different apps and tools to find something that best fits in with the way you work. Once you have this system in place, so much weight gets taken from your shoulders.
