We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Autumn June a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Autumn, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I got my work ethic from my mom and being raised in Germany. My mom was a single mom since I was born and juggled raising me while having an amazing high ranked career in the military. I had such a great example of a hard working and resilient woman growing up. I had every extracurricular activity I wanted and we traveled the world together all while she raised me alone and pursued her career. She gave me everything she could and made tremendous sacrifices. Looking up to her really inspired me to not only have the strength and work ethic she exhibits, but to also be able to give her the world one day. I’ve moved away from my mom twice in pursuit of my career. The first time was to Sydney, Australia to go to makeup school and now I’m living in Los Angeles while she is in Germany. I feel tremendous guilt living away from her especially since it’s always been us two, but what keeps me going is that one day if I keep working hard, I’ll be able to open opportunities for us. I have work ethic instilled in my brain and in my every day life, because if I’m away from her not working hard then I’m living away from her for “nothing” . My mom makes me so proud, I just want to make her proud.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a makeup artist of 7 years. I do a little bit of everything – Bridal, SFX, Red Carpet, TV/Film, and editorial. The most exciting aspect of working in the makeup industry is that it’s a collaborative art form. Wether it’s a bridal client or a director of a film, there’s always a consultation of sharing ideas and figuring out together how we can execute a result that suits the project best. The makeup industry can have it’s cons and aspects to it that make it feel like a superficial place, but at the end of the day my job is help people feel beautiful and confident, and that’s so exciting and rewarding. I do have a few commercials/campaigns, films, and magazine projects that are coming out this year – I will be posting them on my instagram so stay tuned!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that were most impactful in my journey are resilience, being open-minded/receptive, and ambition. To make it in any creative industry you have to dream big and you have to be receptive to any criticism or redirection. Success can be measured by talent but it’s also measured on your drive and how open minded and easy to work with you are. During the journey there will be moments where you feel like you’re winning and the next day, you will feel like opportunities are slipping away. You have to be resilient and make sure you’re learning and growing from any situation and to not let it affect your pride in your art and your dreams. My biggest advice and mantra that I live by is that “You have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable”. Wether it’s moving to a new city by yourself because there’s more opportunities there or taking on a job where you’re not confident, say yes to anything and everything you can and allow yourself to grow, evolve, and learn.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking to collaborate with people. When it comes to creating art, more minds is always greater than one. My imagination always runs wild on how I can take makeup to a whole new level and use other medias and art forms in conjunction. Any models, influencers, photographers, videographers, and anyone in the creative space please always reach out to me. We are in LA to create and I always to be surrounded by like minded creatives and involved in projects. My instagram is Autumnjuneartistry and my email is autumnjuneartistry@gmail.com
