Meet Ava Justin

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ava Justin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Ava , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

Growing up as an actress and being on different on set locations, I definitely got inspired to want to create my own work and now as a filmmaker, I’ve found the more you do what you love, the more you learn. For me the more I work, talk and look at a lot of the successful filmmakers work and decipher how they do and, their thought processes on and what’s currently working, the more I’m inspired with my own films. Also nature. Being outdoors gives me space to think freely and creatively.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

As a young American and Kenyan Actress growing up in a small town where I saw lack of representation, I grew wanting to be a creative, to help create opportunities for myself and so I can do so for others. To make content that’s inspiring, uplifting, entertaining , thought provoking and to be able to collaborate with other like minded independent filmmakers.
As I’m learning so much about being a Filmmaker, I want to also help inspire other young filmmakers that although the entertainment industry is incredibly difficult to break into; they should never give up because with hard work , perseverance, being a kind hearted human being and surrounding yourself with great people who want to see you succeeding and those you can learn from, it’s all possible. And really, no one now’s it all, we’re all trying to figure it out.
I’ve also taken the time to educate myself on the creative and the business side of filmmaking and as a 17 year old,
I co-wrote and produced two full feature length films under my production company Ava Justin Productions and now as an 18 year old, I have produced three movies and two of which are currently in post production phase.
I recently premiered my movie Joy Of Horses which sold out at a movie theater and it’s premiering on Streaming Platforms starting
November 22nd. I’m also currently writing my first book soon to be published also named
Joy of Horses which I’m super excited about and, I can’t wait to have people see the movie and also get an opportunity to read my book.
When I’m not on set, I love hanging out with my friends and family. I’m very blessed to have great people in my life. My family is extremely supportive and they are the ones I first came to learn about handwork. They motivate me and they mean everything to me.
Although I’ve been currently exploring different avenue’s as a filmmaker, What excites me most is when I’m on set. Being an Actress is what I love most.
Acting to me offers the chance to escape into different worlds and to do things I never normally do and with every role I take on, I’m required to learn new things and push out of my comfort zone and that has helped me grow as a person and also an actor. I’m also loving writing and I’m currently writing different genre films, mostly family friendly and Thrillers. It’s wonderful being at the library or on my desk imagining places different scenarios, turning the protagonist into the person the audience wants them to be. I’m also leaning a lot about producing. I feel it’s very important to learn the business of the show business and so no one can try to cheat you on your money. It’s been a very interesting journey which I’m continuing to learn and I’m absolutely loving it.
I’ve also currently been booking more modeling jobs; print and commercials and as they say, nothing in life is guaranteed so, I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunities I’ve been booking.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Knowing how to deal with rejections

A lot in the entertainment industry isn’t a race. Everything is extremely competitive in this field I so love and it’s important to know we’re all carving our own path. so, having a thick skin is extremely important in the entertainment industry because, it is full of No’s and as an actress, there are very few roles so when thousands are competing with one or two main roles, it’s easy to get disappointed with doing auditions and not getting that booking and, which I came to learn that Success means accepting the disappointments and moving on to what’s next and not dwelling on it because, what’s meant for you is for you and what’s not, just wasn’t meant.

Always do your research.

Being aware that not everyone has your best interest at heart in this industry is very important and that’s why educating yourself , knowing good people that offer great advice about filmmaking is extremely important.

Teamwork makes the dream work

In this industry and with how challenging it is, it’s even more important to know and work with people who have your best interests at heart and those who know the importance of team works so, Selecting a team that’s not only is hardworking, but also those that that bring good and positive energy to your film set is extremely vital.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I’m always looking for great and talented creatives as collaborators.
