Meet Averi Slomp

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Averi Slomp. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Averi below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Averi with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I get my work ethic from my wonderful parents. They have always been a great example of how you should lead your life with strength and resilience which I admire. I have always had a passion for cooking and have been encouraged to dive deeper into the profession to utilize my talents. All my life, my parents have worked full time, while managing to parent, cook, clean, and be wonderful people. They are the reason that my work ethic is strong.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My name is Chef Averi, and I created Little A’s Kitchen. Little A’s Kitchen is a personal chef service where I provide weekly meal preparation services as well as dinner parties. I have always had a part in the kitchen. What started out as snapping the ends off of green beans and shucking the corn, to making soup from scratch for my mom when she was feeling sick when I was 7 years old. Cooking has always felt right to me, like I belong there. I struggled with mental health growing up, I didn’t feel like I belonged. That all changed when I was accepted into Kent Career Technical Center’s Culinary Program. There I was able to grow my love for food and gain a lot of knowledge around the industry. After high school, I attended the Secchia Institute for Culinary Education for my Personal Chef Certificate. I am proud to say that after a lot of hard work and dedication, I graduated with my degree in less than 1 year and made the Dean’s List with my academic achievements. Now I get to navigate owning and growing a business in my early twenties. I am proud of Little A’s Kitchen and what I bring to the table. I am now available for meal preparation services! I come into your home once a week and prepare your dinners for the week. It is a great way to cut back on time spent in the kitchen after busy days and helps reduce getting fast food or going out to eat a couple nights a week, which can often be more expensive than having a personal chef. My services are $30/hr + cost of ingredients. I also offer dinner party services!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three most important qualities when it comes to starting a business is having resilience, faith, and being persistent. Starting a business is no easy task. Most of the time there isn’t someone holding your hand and walking you through how to be successful. Resilience is key. It can be hard to get things moving and for your business to gain traction, but it is important to be able to roll with the punches. The next important quality is to have faith. Not only is it vital to have faith in your business, but also to have faith in yourself. Be confident in your skills and abilities and always remember that you started this journey for a reason, to spread the joy and do what you love. Lastly, being persistent is necessary for growing a business. Create business cards, post regularly on social media, advertise and market your business as much as you can so people can hear about what you have to offer.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

The number one obstacle I have faced with starting a business is gaining clientele and spreading the word about my business. I am at a point in my business where I am still in the early stages and am trying to grow my clientele. I am trying to grow Little A’s Kitchen by posting on social media and doing other avenues of advertising such as this article! Starting a business from the ground up is not easy, but I believe that I will make something great and become a helping hand and a staple in my community.
