Avery On The Beat , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Music has always been in the back of my mind growing up. My father used to give me these giant books of Cds while he was on the road as a truck driver. I used to listen to every single one over and over. At the time I had to be around five or six so everything was still new to me. I never understood the lyrics that young but, the production was always amazing to me on certain songs. The first album i remember ever hearing was “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot” from DMX. There was always something so powerful about that album production was and lyrically. Over the years I’ve tried to do many different things. At the time I wanted to play sports, specifically football. The issue with that was that I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at three. Due to my condition i was never physically able to play, cerebral palsy affected my muscles and ligaments pretty bad early on. This made everything physical a huge challenge, not to mention I was in a wheelchair for some time. I thought eventually after i had multiple operations that I would one day be able to play sports when I learned how to walk without equipment. Fast forward and I still had a very rough time moving throughout the day even without a chair. Music was still in my mind and so I joined the school band as a bassist. When i say how an orchestra worked I wanted to find a way to make all of the sounds myself without the use of different instruments. Around the time I was eight or nine years old my aunt has started to date a music producer. I was introduced to him at his house when they were in the dating phase, he had showed me around his home studio. He told me that there was this new program called “Fruity Loops” and that if i was able to learn it that I could do anything on it. The idea of making beats was hit or miss until i heard of the kids at the my school freestyle at the lunch tables. I figured i could make actual beats for them to rap on and from there my purpose was born.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
The most exciting part of my job is watching the ideas we create come to life. Ive been producing records for about 16 years as of 2024. Just like the early days I love to see what songs come out of the beats that I produce.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First I would say that your accountability is everything. Understanding that your habits and routines have a vast effect on your results going forward, it is super important to keep track of your victories and losses and fix them as you go. Second of all, you need to be effectively consistent … Its no secret that practice makes perfect and the more you do, the better you get over time. Many people think its a black and white-you got it or you don’t type of thing when its not. Considering everything can be subjective in the music world it is important to find routine and structure for what you want to accomplish. Finally, my biggest piece of advice is to always be a student of the game and try to be the “dumbest” person in the room. Surround yourself with those you could learn from the majority of the time.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
The ideal client for me is somebody who is conditioned. The perfect client knows what there are in the studio to do and also comes ready to work. Communication is a huge part of the relationship as everything is time based in the studio
