Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Avery Robbins – Palacios. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Avery, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
I developed my ability to take risks gradually — it really started with one small step. Leaving my corporate job was the first big leap, but I told myself it didn’t have to be permanent. I could always go back if I needed to, and that gave me the freedom to actually try.
I always tell myself, “Nothing bad can happen.” It’s a little overly optimistic, but I genuinely believe in the power of mindset over fear. That’s half the battle — once you shift your thinking from “What if this fails?” to “What if this works?” the fear starts to fade.
From there, I started small — designing collections, getting feedback, and improving each time. Every risk taught me something, and over time, they became more intentional. I learned that taking risks isn’t about being reckless; it’s about trusting yourself and staying grounded in what you’ve learned along the way.
Now my risks are more calculated, but that same optimism — that belief that good things happen when you move forward without fear — still drives every decision I make.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m the founder of Lucky Gem Club, where I create handmade gemstone-embellished leather goods such as belts, hatbands and pet collars, as well as upcycled vintage belts. What excites me most about my work is the combination of artistry, craftsmanship, and personal connection. Each piece is designed to tell a story, and I love that my customers get to bring a little piece of that story into their own lives — whether it’s dressing for a wedding, a game day, or just adding something special to their everyday look.
My journey started with a small step — leaving corporate to explore something I was truly passionate about. I told myself I could always go back if I needed to, which gave me the courage to experiment and take risks. I began creating small collections, listening to feedback, and learning how to make each piece stronger. Now, my risks are more calculated, but my optimism drives every decision — I truly believe in a powerful mindset over a fear mindset, and that belief is at the heart of my work.
Right now, I’m focused on expanding the brand in both creative and experiential ways. This includes pop-ups, collaborations, and introducing new ways for customers to interact with my work, like our “Belt Bar”, where people can design their own belts with a variety of conchos. I’m also constantly creating new collections and exploring special releases, so there’s always something fresh for my audience.
At its core, Lucky Gem Club is about celebrating individuality, quality craftsmanship, and a touch of joy in every piece — and that’s what I love sharing with the world.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience taught me to keep moving forward even when things felt uncertain or didn’t go as planned. Curiosity helped me constantly learn — whether it was about my craft, my customers, or how to grow a business. And optimism gave me the courage to take risks and trust myself, even when the outcome wasn’t guaranteed.
For anyone early in their journey, my advice would be: start small, stay curious, and embrace mistakes as lessons. Build your skills and knowledge bit by bit, but don’t wait to be perfect to take a step forward — Start now! And above all, trust your mindset over your fear — having a positive, forward-focused perspective is half the battle.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the last 12 months, my biggest growth has been learning to take calculated risks and fully trust myself. I started working out of my guest bedroom, creating small collections, and slowly building momentum. Over time, I hit record months and even collaborated with people I’d admired on Instagram — moments that were both exciting and intimidating.
The biggest leap came when I signed the lease for my first retail shop for my handmade products — with a broken hand! I fractured my radius right after Christmas, and by February, it was time to commit. Even in a cast, I knew that if I didn’t take the chance, my future self would regret it. That decision forced me to grow in new ways: managing logistics, thinking strategically, and trusting that my creative vision would connect with customers.
This year has taught me that growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone, adapting under pressure, and turning feedback into action. Taking those risks has made me more confident, resilient, and excited about the next chapter of my business.
