Meet Avner Ben-Natan

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Avner Ben-Natan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Avner, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
My optimism comes from thinking about death. We are here for a short while, better make the most of it in creative ways. Creation gives meaning and optimism, and we have a short time to create.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’ve been a lighting designer in film for about fifteen years and when I started to have a family and a designer partner I started making lamps. I love working online as I can move away from the city and be free to settle where delivery trucks can get to. We make artistic lamps, and light art. We started using vegetable steamers as lamps and developed the shape into a multi directional aperture that directs and light and reflects light.
We focus on the textures of light that our lamps create, through perforation and reflection.
In our light art we use reflectors that are augmented and project a three dimensional landscape.
We use a lot of perforated ceramics to create light patterns through sculptural shapes.

We are working on a lighting fixture that would incorporate our light art and bring it into home / business use and we are very close to launching an affordable night light that uses our starting point of the business – a vegetable steamer.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Deep knowledge about the material I’m working with (which is light) but also the ability to learn anything new in design, marketing, manufacturing. A business has so many facets and the ability to learn is key.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My partner who is also my wife helped me all along the way in design, business strategy and endurance. It takes years to be profitable and you have to keep on pushing every step of the way so it’s great to have a partner that can help when needed.
