Meet Awe Atina Nomusa

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Awe Atina Nomusa. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Awe Atina below.

Awe Atina , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

As a child, I always knew my purpose was to serve others. I naturally gravitated towards roles where I could support and uplift those around me. While this question asks how I found my purpose, I believe the journey is ongoing—I’m still discovering how my purpose will be fully realized. Life is about journeying, running a marathon, and experiencing the highs and lows along the way. I started with aspirations of becoming a surgeon, then a forensic investigator, a psychologist, a forensic psychologist, a therapist, a social worker, and even a women’s hormonal health coach. Now, my interest has deepened into the field of women’s health, particularly focusing on hormonal health. At the age of 14, I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), a metabolic condition that significantly shaped my understanding of women’s health and how my body functions hormonally. So, while I’ve always known that I want to serve and help others, the exact path is something I’m still discovering. I’m allowing life and Spirit to guide me on this journey.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

As mentioned before, I have a long history of wanting to help others. During my undergraduate career, I was focused on mental health, with a passion for both psychology and forensic pathology. This passion led me to earn a BA in Psychology and an MA in Social Work. While in my master’s program at the University of Southern California, I discovered a deep interest in helping youth, which guided me to my current role as an educational social worker. However, I found myself increasingly drawn to women’s health, specifically focusing on hormones, and eventually became involved in the doula field.

Before my current job, I worked as a doula while gaining clinical hours in a private mental health practice. It was during this time that I realized I wanted to become a Fertility Doula. I recognized that fertility is about more than just achieving pregnancy—it’s a vital aspect of overall health. This realization inspired me to create my business, Fertility Dewla, LLC.

The name Fertility Dewla came to me as I explored the roots of my birth name, Tálor (Tahh-lor), which means ‘dew in the morning,’ during a Rites of Passage in the Kemetic Tradition. Fertility Dewla was born out of love and personal growth. Our mission is to educate and empower women to understand their hormonal imbalances and bodily functions, optimizing their overall health and fertility. Our vision is to raise awareness of fertility as a vital sign of women’s health and inspire women to take control of their fertility, thereby increasing their chances of successful pregnancies. We also aim to contribute to reducing Black maternal mortality rates. We offer services such as cycle coaching, hormone health coaching, groups, and soon we hope to offer individual mental health support.

Through the journey of building Fertility Dewla, I embraced a new name: Awe (Ah-weh) Atina (ah-tinah) Nomusa, meaning ‘Water, mother who teaches her people to survive by gardening, and she who is merciful.’ I am excited to continue learning and to advocate for fertility as a fifth vital sign through Fertility Dewla, LLC. We are currently relaunching our website and preparing to introduce new opportunities—stay tuned!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, I believe the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were resilience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to lifelong learning.

Resilience allowed me to navigate the inevitable challenges and setbacks, whether it was shifting career paths or facing personal struggles. This quality helped me to keep moving forward, even when the path wasn’t clear. Adaptability was crucial as my interests and passions evolved over time, leading me from psychology to social work, and eventually to women’s health and fertility. Being open to change and willing to pivot when necessary enabled me to find my true calling. Lastly, a commitment to lifelong learning has been fundamental. Whether it was through formal education, professional training, or personal exploration, continuously expanding my knowledge has allowed me to grow and refine my purpose.

For those early in their journey, my advice is to focus on developing these qualities. Cultivate resilience by embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. Be adaptable and open to where life takes you, even if it means veering off your initial path. And most importantly, never stop learning. Seek out knowledge, experiences, and mentors who can help you grow in both your personal and professional life. Your journey will be unique, and these qualities will help you navigate it with confidence and purpose.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

Over the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been in the realm of self-improvement, particularly through a deep commitment to spiritual practice, therapy, and healing. I’ve learned that self-improvement doesn’t just enhance my personal journey; it also has a direct impact on my business relationships. This journey has allowed me to connect more deeply to get clarity about how to show up throughout my business. As business owners, we can often become susceptible to negative thoughts about ourselves if our artistry isn’t received as we hope. By integrating self care practices into my daily life, I’ve become more self-aware and more compassionate toward myself and others. This period of intense personal work has laid a strong foundation for continued growth and has profoundly influenced how I show up in my professional life.
