Meet Axel Rivera

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Axel Rivera a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Axel, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

Finding myself in new creative spaces and network environments is something that I self encourage but it can also come up as a constant challenge since the industry is competitive. Embracing my journey and remembering where I come from is important to me. I like to share my personal experience and reflect on what I had to work on in the past to be where I am now.
I am proud to bring my culture and work ethic when I’m on set or working on a new project. I think the latino experience is very specific, our values are rooted on generosity, respect and appreciation for the craft of things.
Being at the service of others and making sure that everybody in the crew or team is feeling good is what makes the difference. When creating; bringing fresh ideas and coming up with creative solutions is a valuable skill to have.
At the end of the day we remember and admire people for being truly themselves and unique. I strike for reflecting that to others and myself.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My journey on pursuing still and motion photography started at a young age. During high school I worked freelancing as a photographer for small businesses and capturing headshots, as well as I ventured soon after that into the real estate industry, producing drone videos and photos which was very demanding at that time and it helped me grow professionally.
I always had a love and appreciation for film, so I relocated to Los Angeles as soon I had the opportunity, where I expanded my expertise on Film and TV sets, contributing as a film still photographer and working for the production and camera department. I also involved myself at film festivals in LA, where I worked premiere events as a photographer and videographer and got the opportunity to connect with fellow filmmakers.
Looking ahead, my aspirations include being the DP for a feature film as well as working in the music industry creating music videos. As my personal brand grows, I aim to connect with more creatives to collaborate on projects that inspire and provoke meaningful conversations within our generation.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

As a visual learner, organizing ideas through mood boards were and are essential to me. This method helps creating a cohesive and clear vision, serving as a reference throughout the project. Utilizing visual tools helps me in articulating ideas and concepts to others, that way you make sure that everyone involved has a shared understanding of the project direction and goal.
When you encounter unfamiliar tasks, prioritizing research and understanding the context beforehand helps to avoid any negative outcomes. Also, getting the necessary tools is crucial. Just being well prepared minimizes errors, securing the quality of the final product.
Being available and at the service to others requires efficient scheduling and organization. Leaving specific time for pre-production tasks will help with high productivity. This also includes balancing the work and self-time which is crucial to avoid burnout.

How would you describe your ideal client?

An ideal client communicates clearly their ideas, they sort of embody their brand or project and are open to have a conversation that will lead to and end goal.
Memorable productions reflect passion as a crew and also care for the people and their well-being. An ideal client provides safety and a fair treatment to everybody involved in a project.
