We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aylin Marsella. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aylin below.
Aylin , sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
Mental health has always been a different concept for me to understand. Though I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2022 and I understand aspects of psychology in a theoretical sense, I have often found myself struggling to understand my own mental health. Especially in regard to finding explanations and alternatives for coping mechanisms that I have acquired throughout my life. Currently at this stage in my life, I am attending therapy after struggling to stay consistent in the past and I have been dedicating this chapter of my life to healing. In the past, I have struggled to accept help and previously believed that I needed to figure things out on my own due to my knowledge of psychology. However, after experiencing a very tumultuous life change recently, I decided that I could no longer delay my healing journey. 5 months ago, I decided that it was time to seek professional help with facing my traumas, facing my past, and healing profoundly. With that said, I have been able to persist through the challenges related to mental health issues because of my awareness of patterns in my life. Despite going through extreme highs and lows in my life, I have always managed to reinvent myself and not allow my unfortunate circumstances to determine whether I will succeed or not. Usually, after facing very extreme lows, I become inspired, fed up, and determined to change my circumstances and give myself a better life. I find that when I focus on my end goal and remind myself that despite what I go through, if I do not stop and persevere through what life throws my way, I will eventually reach that goal and that inspires me to continue– despite experiencing depression, anxiety, and trauma. Ultimately, developing an innate understanding that us as humans go through highs and lows but they do not define our ability to better ourselves, allows us to not limit ourselves to the struggling version of us that we may have been in the past. We can reinvent and alchemize our life experiences at any moment, especially artists– create and inspire, make beauty out of your pain.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Aylin Marsella, and I am a multifaceted creative that currently resides in Colorado. I have always been a very creative person who is in touch with my intuition and found that even at a young age, writing music/lyrics became a cathartic way in which I was able to express myself. Though I was a very shy kid who experienced a lot of sadness and change at a young age, I found solace in performing and have always been drawn to choir, band, and theatre. I believe that subconsciously, I have always been drawn to the idea of transforming and leaving behind yourself to embody a character and a story, even if it is only for a moment. I also loved the beauty of art: through music, story, and poetry.
Though my journey with performing began as a child, I began to consider acting as a career when I moved to New York City in 2022. After moving to New York, my passion for art and acting truly flourished due to the constant inspiration around me– from the streets of New York to the passionate and talented individuals that I met along the way.
Current updates in my career include starring in a feature film called “The Flamingo Effect” with Truce Media. I had the privilege of working with an amazing cast and crew. I am also set to act in a stage play, “The Tin Woman” in my hometown. “The Tin Woman” has sparked my love for theatre once again (I am back to my roots) and challenged me to portray a different and more physical performance with acting.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important areas of knowledge that were the most impactful on my journey was: 1. understanding that art and creation is beyond your physical body and a physical plane; There is a dedication and fountain of creation that is beyond the 3D world. Creating art is a connection to the divine and an innate trust that you are working together to develop a different adaption of a feeling that may have already been shown, told, or done in a different way; while simultaneously understanding that your art will stand on its’ own. You must trust that knowing and create anyways– despite the doubt, procrastination, or fear. 2. You can always reinvent, and you are not bound to only one way of creating. Oftentimes, artists believe that they are bound to their existing method of creating art– whether it be painting, acting, singing, etc. and they believe that they may not reach the success or have the same flow if they embark on a new journey and method of creation. However, as humans, as souls, we are multifaceted, and we are limitless beings who do not have to stick to one avenue of creation. At any moment, we can change, grow, and decide to take on a different path, whatever feels authentic to us. 3. The last area of knowledge that has been the most impactful on my journey has been being gentle with myself. I am the oldest daughter of two immigrant parents so it is safe to say that I can be very critical of myself. I have found that oftentimes, I want to create on a rigid schedule, and I can be very condescending to myself about my creations, whether it be scripts, poetry, songs…I have trouble believing that it is “good enough.” Therefore, in this new chapter of my life, I am allowing myself more grace and patience while learning a more fluid discipline that feels natural and supportive in my day-to-day life.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Similarly to a lot of humans on planet Earth, I often feel conflicted in my feelings towards how my parents raised me. On a conscious level, I understand the struggles and circumstances they faced and how difficult it must have been to raise a child under those conditions. I was born to a 17-year-old mother and 18-year-old father in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico. Ultimately, they were two young adults who were forced to grow up and decided to move to a completely new country, learn a new language, and adapt to a new culture, all while raising a child. They did this in order to set me up to have better opportunities and a better future– which I did. This was the first impactful thing that my parents did. Throughout my life, they have supported me in many ways. Despite everything that we have lived through together, I know I can rely on them whenever I need to which has been extremely helpful in my journey.
