We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ayumi Moore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ayumi, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Since I was a child, I have always been inspired by my mother. She is one of the hardest-working and strongest women I know. I often thought to myself, “I want to be a superwoman like her when I grow up.” I had a rough childhood and have been bullied throughout my life. Even when I joined the Army as a diesel mechanic, it was challenging to work in a male-dominated field. I have always been extremely competitive, an overachiever, and I want to break stereotypes. Growing up with all brothers made me something of a tomboy. I always wanted to prove that girls can do whatever boys can do, and I have certainly demonstrated that over the years. When I became a mother, it unlocked even more drive within me. I had to be the best I could possibly be for my daughter’s future. With that mentality, I felt like a superhero.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
What I love about being a full-time content creator is that there are no limitations when it comes to growing in my career. I know content creators who have gone from nothing to having a top-selling product, a cover on Vogue, being featured in Forbes, or even becoming famous singers or actors— you name it! I also love how I can inspire millions of people or make them laugh through my videos. I’ve always been a creative person who enjoys making others laugh. Now, I get to entertain millions of people for a living.
I currently create content focused on relatable mom skits, lifestyle topics, dancing, and cooking. My niche is always evolving as I grow in life. It is an interesting career because when people ask what I do, they either don’t take my job seriously or are confused about how I even make an income from entertaining on social media. Little do people know that it is a full-on business. I have an S Corporation LLC, talent management, accountants, and sometimes a personal assistant.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three skills that have been impactful on my social media journey are determination, creativity, and confidence. Most people quit after not seeing results or progress on their social media accounts. It took me around three years of posting consistently without seeing results to finally achieve some growth and income. During those three years, I learned how social media works, and to this day, I am still learning because it is always evolving.
My advice would be to conduct your research, stand out from others in your niche, and remain consistent. Like everything else, you can’t learn and improve without trying. I am always researching ways to improve, and the internet is free. There are thousands of videos you can watch to learn how to become a full-time content creator.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
My number one obstacle to being a full-time content creator is the inconsistency of my business. Some days I get great views, while on other days I don’t. Some months I make over six figures, but other months I earn zero dollars. Just like any other business, there are numerous risks and challenges. Right now, I am trying to figure out ways to achieve greater stability and diversify my income streams. My goal is to monetize my YouTube channel to generate passive income and to build a strong community. YouTube is arguably one of the best platforms for achieving success as a content creator, but it is also the most challenging.
