We recently connected with B. Cloy and have shared our conversation below.
B. , thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
By being curious. I’ve always been a person who wanted to try new things whether it was sports, the arts, language, or academics. Because of my curiosity, I became pretty good at a lot of things or understood a lot of new things. After you’ve attempted new things so many times, you’re no longer afraid to take a risk.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is B. Cloy and I’m a singer/songwriter from Havana, FL. I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember. And I try to reflect that same love in my music. The thing that is most special about being a songwriter is being able to tell when the audience really resonates with a song. It’s really an honor to connect with people in a language where just plain words would fail.
This past summer I got a chance to open up for the R&B group NEXT in Tallahassee. It was my first time opening for a major act so it definitely felt like I was reaching a milestone.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three skills that were pivotal on my journey: work ethic, being coachable, and performance. I don’t think a lot of people know this but I used to Lyft to and from the studio probably three times a week because I didn’t have a car. It was tough but it was just something I had to if I wanted to continue to make music. So, the best advice I can give to new artists is to keep going.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
There are actually two people. And those people are Albert Hilt and Jimmy La-Mer. I can’t tell you how many nights I’ve stayed up on the phone talking about music with these two, or the number of trips I’ve taken to Orlando to work on music. But I do know that these two people helped me keep going.
