Meet B Walter Will

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful B Walter Will a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi B Walter, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

Certainly from my mother, and in other manners my father and grandfather.
My mother is obvious because she was left with many responsibilities financially and emotionally during and after my parent’s divorce. Four kids alone is not an easy task.
The traits of resilience and hard work ethic definitely came through my grandfather’s (her) veins.

My father’s side was and is riddled with addiction issues.
My father tried and worked like hell to rid himself of these issues but succumbed too many times to count.
Because of his resilience or at least will to fight his addiction he still was a good father. I miss him.
Ultimately it is up to us to get off the mat after being knocked down again and again.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am the Author of The Yellow Pinto.

Writing and launching a novel has a lot of moving parts. It has been a fascinating time for certain. Each time we get the book into a new bookstore or an online retailer, it is really exciting to see.

As far as the book goes, I hope that readers will see the moments of rational and irrational behavior, some of the actions due to addiction, others to complex issues with relationships with lovers, friends, family and a constant thirst for thrill. Parts of the stories deal with gambling, which is one of the fastest growing businesses in the world. As a society, we are being inundated with advertisements and lures of potential and glamour. The facts are many of these quests for the big payout / holiday / lust /glamour end in sorrow and financial ruin, and the loss and trust of loved ones. And yet, the adrenaline overcomes you and you still want more. The stories are not a soap box but, I would like to think cautionary tales. Drugs, sex, and any rush that is tempting are embedded in the novel. I like to consider it as transgressive fiction, dirty realism.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three pieces of knowledge that have stuck with me and I am glad to share with others are:

1st: Joy and Journey – experience it all.

2nd: S + S = S….Sweat plus Sacrifice equals Success…a retired MVP baseball player once preached this to us as kids and early teens. There is truth in both the sweat and the sacrifice.

3rd: Do not be afraid of failure. If you want to accomplish anything, it is necessary to put negative outcomes in your past. Try and enjoy life.

If you are early in your journey, try to remember that overcoming uncomfortable experiences or unknown obstacles can be very rewarding.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I love music! I am consistently going to see live music all over the city. It is by far one of my favorite things to do and Los Angeles has amazing and historic venues for live music. Bands, venues, bookstores, record shops, other artists, sports fanatics and great restaurants and bars is something I like to look after and connect with as ways of bringing people together in collaboration.

I would love to see the book turn into something visual with music as it’s accomplice. I love the marriage of sound and vision.
