Meet B West

We were lucky to catch up with B West recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi B, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

Overcoming imposter syndrome has been an ongoing journey, one that I’m still navigating. A key part of this has been surrounding myself with a supportive queer community, especially women and gender-expansive people, whose shared experiences helped me realize I’m not isolated. I’ve also learned the value of seeking advice and support from trusted mentors in the music industry. Asking for help has taught me to set aside my ego and reconnect with the true purpose behind my art.

Accepting imperfections has been another crucial step. Recognizing that mistakes are part of the creative process has allowed me to be more compassionate with myself. Additionally, consistent practice and taking risks have been essential in moving past feelings of inadequacy. Whether through performing, hosting events, leading workshops, collaborating on tracks, or simply talking through ideas, each step has helped me build confidence and a stronger sense of self.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am B. WEST, a producer, DJ, musician and event host. I released my debut album “EX-FANTASY” in 2024. Currently I am in Berlin focusing on writing and recording a new album. In my live sets and recordings I blend punk, EBM, acid, techno, and 90s rave sounds to create a dynamic and energetic performance and sound.

I am also supporting community initiatives in Berlin that help women, non-binary and trans folks in learning how to produce music and gain performance opportunities. My aim is to inspire and connect with listeners on a deeper level, all while keeping the energy high and the music raw.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

My open mind and ability to listen have been helpful in fostering connections, inspiration and good working relations with other artists.

My tenacity has pushed me to keep creating, performing, and evolving despite setbacks, and driving me to always move forward.

My capacity for delight has allowed me to find joy in the creative process and performance, which keeps me inspired to make music even during difficult times.

My advice to others is to be authentic and true to you, as well as cultivate a mindset of curiosity and empathy. Surround yourself with a diverse group of people and be open to learning from different perspectives. Listen actively, not just to respond, but to truly understand others’ ideas and experiences. Collaboration and feedback are key to growth, so embrace them as opportunities to improve. Embrace the joy in the process of creation, not just the end result. Find moments of celebration in each step of your artistic journey and acknowledge your growth.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I am overwhelmed I tune into my body using somatic techniques such as stretch, shake, dance, breath, run, sing and movement. This helps me regulate my nervous system, get grounded and reconnect with myself. I also am a big fan of meditation, and getting into the forest or sea.
