We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bad Guy Ocean a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bad Guy Ocean, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Actually to be honest, I don’t think I will ever overcome it permanently. However I have learned to manage the feelings that come with imposter syndrome. A part of me feels like those feelings also come from being humble and thankful. I also believe some of the feelings/thoughts that come from “I.S.” are just natural human feelings we all feel, have felt, and will continue to. Instead of trying to focus on “overcoming” or “curing” it. I’d rather learn how to manage it cause at the end of the day. It’s hard to control natural human feelings.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
So I actually write all types of music, but for me as an artist and the music I personally release is rap/hip hop. My music is so special to me because when I’m writing songs, it’s like venting to my journal. It’s my therapy. Which is why I’m super excited about my upcoming mixtape Agoraphobia, which will be dropping spring of 2025. This mixtape is special to me because not only is it my first rap project but I’m truly opening up and being vulnerable about my feelings, thoughts, mental state, opinions, etc…
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The 3 key things that have been most impactful on my journey:
1. My branding.
2. Song writing ability.
3. Being bold enough to be unapologetically me!
My advice for folks early on their journey as an artist would be to remain authentic to yourself. Be a student, practice, practice, practice. After that practice some more! There will always be thousands of other folks doing exactly what you are. But there is only 1 YOU. Take that and use it to your advantage.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
My biggest obstacle currently is definitely social media. Though SM has had a lot of positive effects on the world, I hate how toxic it has become as well. Content creating is a lot of hard work. Growing a following, finding your niche. It’s just all lot. But I’m definitely working at getting better.
