Meet Bailey Houston

We were lucky to catch up with Bailey Houston recently and have shared our conversation below.

Bailey , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

My sourdough journey started when my sister told me she was trying to start her own starter and the sibling challenge took over and I wouldn’t let her do it alone, let alone win! So we both worked together on our starter through FaceTime and on the same day both our starters became active and we have grown into what we are now! We had a lot of challenges the first year, both in life and sourdough, but sourdough was something we could always turn to keep our minds busy. We even got ur dad to start his sourdough journey with us! It’s a fun family thing we get to all connect with! After about 3 months I got in touch with a coffee shop that let me set up a little table outside their doors and they are truly the ones to help me realize that I love making fresh bread for people to feel good and wanting to keep coming back for more! The people I have worked with selling in front of their stores have been such a blessing and I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t fr their help and their openness!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I never thought in my life I would be a sourdough baker! My boyfriend suggested it so many times but I was always intimidated with the thought of keeping a sourdough starer alive. Then once my sister said she was starting one it was game on! Really we worked together and got out active on the same day! I was working a at home job and I really was not happy to be apart of. It wasn’t something I loved doing, but I kept at it because it gave me the opportunity to stay home with my boys! They are my biggest motivation on why I pushed myself to keep going with my business and grow as much as I have! Now I am able to stay home with them and have the opportunity to watch them grow and help them learn! Unfortunately, during the start of my journey we lost my mom to cancer. That was the hardest thing I have ever gone through. It was nice to have something to keep my mind busy during that time. I am happy we were able to share with her the start of our journey, but like anyone we wish she was able to see more. It’s been so amazing to be able to share the journey with my dad! He definitely tries to one-up us so we are always challenging each other on things to bake and who’s comes out better! This really has been a family journey and it’s been so fun to have something we all connect with!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back the three things that were most impactful on my journey is how I get to do this with my family and I will always have them by my side with any challenges I face along with them pushing me to try to do more and get out of my comfort zone. I get to see the joy people have on the products I sell, and that this has given my the greatest opportunity to be my own boss and have the time I get with my kids and family. My kids are my biggest motivation, as long as what I am doing is providing them with that they need and it will help they succeed in life that is all I care abut. The best advice I can give is you have to get out there and try. It may not happen the first, second or third time but if you stay constant and you push yourself more each day you will get to your goals!

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

The most impactful thing my dad has done for me is push me to be a better person every day. This man is my life. I would not be the kind of person I am today if I didn’t have him by my side. I have seen so many challenges he has been through and never once seen him stop or complain. He knew what he had to do and he got it done. That has been something I try do every day, never stop working on yourself and your goals. Now that I have my own family I want to show them the way my dad showed me, no matter the challenge go in with your head high and overcome it.
