Meet Bailey Keller

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bailey Keller. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Bailey, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

I think most creatives struggle with imposter syndrome at some point in their career. Especially with social media. I’ve struggled with it more and more over the years. I overcome imposter syndrome by limiting my social media scrolling and try to focus on myself and my own work. I try to reflect on how far I’ve come. Reminding myself that my work isn’t for everyone but it is for some!

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a portrait photographer focusing on families, weddings and boudoir. I also take on seniors and branding but it’s not as focused and researched like the others. The most exciting part about my career is how much I love to do it! Even when I’m super stressed out/booked up, I just love the work and truly enjoy every session. I love growing with families and making friends along the way. I have a studio downtown Sioux Falls, SD and it’s where I spend a lot of my session time. I have upcoming Valentine minis in the studio and hopefully some Spring photos soon as well.

Life is remembered through photographs and it always will be!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Reliable is a quality that I am so thankful to have and will always strive to have. The number one reason I hear people leaving a photographer is waiting months for photos, not getting responses, ghosted or hard to schedule with. I try to respond right away and deliver a high quality product as soon as possible.

Flexible/adaptable would be my next trait that I couldn’t have made it without. Weather can cause a lot of reschedules. Shooting weddings you HAVE to be adaptable because you never know what will go wrong or when you’ll get off schedule.

Graphic design skills have also helped me build my business. I graduated with a design degree and having the knowledge to edit has saved me so much time. Having this degree has also assisted me with my social media platform. I just know my way around a computer and adobe programs really well from this degree.

Advice for those just starting out as photographers would be to learn right away how to take a solid, nice photo. I think a lot of new photographers rely on editing. But so much time can be saved if you learn how to take a proper photo.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

I think my number one challenge right now would be keeping up with trends. I do find as I get older that I’m not quite as quick with implementing new trends and styles. I feel they change a lot faster now than they used to. Overcoming this isn’t impossible and I use social media to inspire me. I love following local photographers and not locals. The best way to learn and grow is by conversing with others in your field. My goal is to implement something new with every session! Learning to not be scared of change and welcome growth!
