We recently connected with Balazs Banner and have shared our conversation below.
Balazs, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My generosity comes from God. I always had a heart for helping people, but since I became a Christian, my generosity elevated to a whole new level. I understood that God has blessed us with so much already and keeps blessing us every day. When you realize that not everything is your own personal achivement, it helps you develop a grateful attitude. With this grateful attitude, generosity comes more naturally. Being generous and helping other gives such satisfaction to one’s soul that material possessions can’t provide. As Cardinal Francis George said: “The only thing we take with us when we die is what we have given away,”

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I own Banner Construction, a family owned construction company I founded in 2016 with my father Laszlo Banner and my brother Balint Banner when we immigrated to the United States.
We have more than 40 years of combined experience in both residential and commercial construction. We specialize in mostly interior remodeling services like bathroom remodel, kitchen remodels, flooring, drywall, texture, paint, lighting etc.
We at Banner Construction believe in providing our customers with the highest quality service and materials in order to make the project a good memory for our customers to remember. Our goal is to provide our customers with our expertise and the best European quality service, while meeting today’s American standards.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience – Through my journey of getting here, I faced many obstacles. After finishing college in Hungary, I lived in 3 different countries before coming to the US. Staring over in a new country this many times built a strong resilience in me. Several problem solving skills I developed and the ability to keep going and not to give up. There is a pattern that once you start something new, things tend to get harder before they get better. If you know this ahead of time – which I didn’t know, but learned along the way- then you can brace yourself for the hard times knowing that if you do the right thing long enough it will pay off.
Integrity – My parents taught me early on that if I give my word to someone I have to keep it. I found this a very useful skill in school and later on in business. If you have integrity, people you are in contact with or later on business partners, clients etc. will know they can count on you. Without integrity it is impossible to build long lasting relationships either in your personal life or in business.
Being a good communicator – This skill is as most other skills comes easier for some than others, but everyone can work on being a better communicator. Good communication is essential in any relationship and therefore it’s key if you’re trying to build a business. Smooth communication puts your clients at ease. Lets your team know what’s going on in the organization or on a particular job site. It can prevent costly mistakes or client frustration. I know many tradesmen who are great at what they’re doing, however they are struggling to run their business smoothly because of their insufficient communication. The good news is that out of the three skills I mentioned, this is the easiest to improve. There are several books that can help improve your communication skills and as the old saying goes: practice makes perfect. Just get out there and simply improve by doing it.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The book Rich Dad Poor Dad from Robert Kiyosaki is a book that I read in my early 20’s and I think it is a very good book for developing an business mindset. It discusses the difference between the employee mindset that classic education gives to people and the entrepreneurial mindset. Reading the book would probably challenge the view of many readers and I feel it would be an essential read for someone thinking about starting a business.
