We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Barb Schilling. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Barb below.
Barb, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from the belief that what you give to the universe will come back to you. Optimism is a happiness magnet. If you treat people nicely and have a positive attitude, good things and good people will be drawn to you. Our motto is “Live life on the bright side” which is full of optimism and positivity.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
After spending over 20 years in healthcare, I decided to make a change and follow my dreams. I had always wanted to own a boutique. In April 2021 that dream became a reality and BrightSky Boutique was launched. In April of this year we relocated to The Forum at Greenbriar inside Parlor Salon Suites. Our goal is to provide affordable and stylish women’s clothes for all body types. We currently offer a variety of women’s clothes, shoes, jewelry, and accessories. We carry boutique brands such as KanCan, Gigio, BiBi, Spartina, and many more. The unique thing about us is that we don’t re-order items so once it’s gone, it’s gone. We are always bringing in new styles each week.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
-A positive and helpful attitude is important so that customers will continue to come back to shop. We make it a priority to go above and beyond for our customers to make sure they are satisfied.
-Honesty is also important. When customers come into the shop to try on clothes they appreciate the honest feedback we give them.
– Determination and a strong work ethic are important. We spend a lot of time browsing clothes and jewelry from various vendors. We’ve learned what items sell and what the customers tend to gravitate towards. We work hard to listen to the feedback from our customers.
The best advice we can give is to listen to your customers. We also make it a point to network with other local small businesses and we all support one another.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My dad was a Marine that served in World War II. When he returned from the war, he started his own business and was a successful business owner his entire life. He taught me to believe in myself and that with hard work I could accomplish anything. He also taught me that honesty and integrity are important qualities for customer service. He took pride in everything he did and he knew that his reputation was the most important thing. I knew if I applied these qualities to my own business that I would have the same success that he did.
