We recently connected with Barbara Green and have shared our conversation below.
Barbara, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity stems from my parents. They were both dedicated givers, always helping others in the community. I take pride in assisting others because I believe that in the end, God will bless me for the love and care I share with those around me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a mother of two daughters, and I raised them as a single mother. My granddaughters bring immense joy to my life, and I find fulfillment in giving back to the community. For over 30 years, I’ve been a Mary Kay consultant, thoroughly enjoying selling their cosmetics. Beyond that, I immerse myself in various sewing projects and cherish quality time spent with my family.
Recently, I achieved the honor of becoming a best-selling author with my recipe book, “Barbara Green’s Family Tree Recipe Book.” Additionally, I’m contributing to an anthology titled “The Blueprint of a ThriveHER,” where my daughter serves as the visionary. Excitingly, I’m also working on my second recipe book to share with the world. After retiring from my Georgia-based employment over a decade ago (after 32 years with the company), I’ve wholeheartedly embraced retirement life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As I reflect on my life, several influential moments stand out:
1. Independence and Motherhood: Discovering the importance of independence as a woman has been pivotal. Raising my beautiful daughters as a single mother and having a job that provides for their needs has been a true blessing.
2. Spirituality and Family: I deeply appreciate creating a family environment rooted in spirituality and guided by my Christian faith. This foundation has shaped our lives in meaningful ways.
3. Overcoming Adversity: One of the most significant turning points was finding my voice to speak about my past. Through the upcoming project “The Blueprint of a ThriveHER,” I share my journey from being a victim of abuse to becoming a blueprint for resilience. Now, I empower others to break free from the chains of domestic violence.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Growing up, my parents instilled in me the value of hard work and independence. Our household was one where cleaning, chores, and earning our keep were the norm. Nothing was handed to us; we had to work diligently for everything we received. This upbringing left an indelible mark on me, especially as a woman.
As a single mother, I drew upon these lessons to navigate life and provide the best possible upbringing for my children. The resilience and resourcefulness I learned from my parents allowed me to face challenges head-on. Beyond practical skills like cooking and cleaning, they also imparted a sense of sentimentality—a deep appreciation for life’s simple moments.
I am profoundly grateful for their guidance, which shaped me into the person I am today.
