Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Barbara Howlin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Barbara, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my clarity of purpose by releasing the idea that our path is supposed to be linear. As I empowered myself as a creative and trusted my intuition more, I started trying many things. Things I had deemed too wild, out-there or risky. Only in listening within, one intuition trust at a time, did I expand and see that the path is meant to be non-linear. In that, my deepest root purpose became clear. As just that, the root. The root of a tree that can then reach up with many branches, many directions and still feel grounded. This is what I love to encourage and empower other creatives to do. I feel my purpose is to help others rewild their intuition and get flowing their unique way.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
For the last decade, I’ve been guiding people on rewilding their intuition, claiming their clarity of purpose and living as their most authentic self. By releasing limiting stories so they can lead with ease, dive in with more kiddo play and embrace their personal flow to reclaim an abundant life. Sound fun? I know it can be. And yes, it can be easier.
I created my business, The Howling Hive, for just that. As a space is to feel the universal buzz connecting us all in community and to uncover people’s individual howl. Here at The Hive we dive in with the tools that helped me uncover it all for myself. From The Artist’s Way Guided Groups, to Human Design readings & mastermind crews, to embodiment practices with Reiki healing. And by getting creating. I feel we are all born creative and reclaiming this jumpstarts our delight in life and our authenticity.
And a recent freebie anyone can check out is my ebook Break The Rules: How to Do The Artist’s Way Your Way. This is the added nuance and trickster fun I’ve found is needed to have freedom and actually finish The Artist’s Way. It’s free on our website now.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The top three areas that shifted my trajectory and life were: trust, connection and creativity. I didn’t trust much and had such deep-seated fears. I had to reconnect to my own body, to like-spirited people, and to some bigger collective energy all around (hence Reiki energy healing for me) so that I could expand and get creating- my way.
My first suggestion for others would be reconnecting to their body. I wouldn’t presume to tell people, ‘Just listen! Can’t you hear your intuition?’ Many people, like me, are or were in survival mode in their body. We’re living under systems trying to shut us down collectively. It took me time to reconnect to this. To then, finally, start hearing this whisper of intuition again and feeling I was safe to trust it, to get experimenting. So one deep breath, one minute of slowing down, to one trust at a time. I’d tell people, it all adds up. I promise.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I do what I call micro creations. This is one of the main elements of our mastermind crew, Hivemind, here. In fact, I did one right before starting this interview to clear it all away. To sit for just a few minutes and set the intention to free-flow create something just for you. Not to show off or post about or sell. I just did a fast and furious doodle for tens minutes that turned out to be a long garden path with a trellis covered in wild flowers growing in every direction. It felt damn satisfying. This lets our brain get quiet, settled and focused on something else. Plus, we get a positive brain boost from little bouts of creativity and savoring the process just for us. If you have the brain spins or get stuck in productivity guilt, I highly recommend it to reconnect and open your flow.
