Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Barbara Latta. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Barbara, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Growing up in church I heard a lot about finding God’s will for my life. But the focus always seemed to be on finding a career path. I struggled with knowing what God wanted me to do. I went to college and majored in Elementary Education but I didn’t have the desire to continue along that road.
My education helped me as I homeschooled my two sons for several years. But I felt dissatisfied for a long time wondering if I pleased God with other areas of my life. I finally discovered an online teaching that focused on Romans 12:1-2 which tells us, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God”
These Scriptures came alive to me illuminating that truth that God’s will for all of us is to make ourselves a living sacrifice. The companion Scripture to this is Matthew 6:33 as Jesus told His followers to seek God first in everything.
Once this became my life’s verse the pressure of seeking what I needed to DO left as I started to only seek to KNOW the Lord on a deeper level.
My purpose became clearer as the Lord’s desires became my desires (Psalm 37:4).
I had always loved reading books and writing in journals. My desire to write about what I learned through the study of the Word grew. I attended writing conferences, webinars, and critique groups. Writing biblical articles, devotions, and Bible studies continues to bring me joy.
Writing is leading to speaking as I have completed certification as a Power Speaker through the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association. Opportunities to lead Bible studies at my church and co-lead a ladies conference have opened doors to other avenues to share what the Lord has taught me.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My desire is to write books as a professional author. I have a published book of devotions for motorcycle riders based on the adventures my husband and I have encountered while riding his bike.
I got the idea for my blog, Navigating Life’s Curves, from our road trips. My focus is identity in Christ. Life’s obstacles are only overcome as we navigate them according to the victory Christ gave us. Learning to live this way is a daily commitment because we are inundated with worldly opinions that drive us toward the potholes of negativity.
Currently, I have a manuscript about Christmas I hope to publish before December of 2025. My focus is on the reasons Christ was born. I hope to encourage readers to dig into Scripture with new eyes and not depend upon traditional beliefs, not simply about Christ’s birth, but about every aspect of God’s Word.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The first thing I wish I would have done would be making Bible reading and prayer more of a priority. I have used different methods of study but I also have to admit I wasn’t consistent. Once this became the most important part of my day, the effectiveness of change was evident.
As a writer, I have learned from professionals in this field. Being willing to listen to others who are more experienced than I am educates me even if I have heard the same lesson before. The temptation to compare ourselves with others can be prevalent in any field. How we handle this is a test of humility. Finding God’s purpose for me is not the same as His purpose for another person.
My advice to others is to put God first, find a mentor you can trust, and avoid the comparison trap.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
One of my life struggles has been condemnation. I learned from the book, “The War is Over,” by Andrew Wommack. This taught me that God is not mad at me over sin because Jesus took the punishment for all sin at the cross.
I never thought about the fact that Jesus has forgiven even future sin. His sacrifice covers it all. He wants us to be conscience of the righteousness He gave us and not the sin He has wiped away. When we think this way we can be victorious. Changing our thinking to agree with what God says does transform our lives.
