We were lucky to catch up with Barnet Hellman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Barnet, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Both parents. They had a tough and yet wonderful life raising, trying to raise six (6) children of various mental and physical acuity, interests, hobbies, and friends. And somehow, they always provided for all of us, whether working multiple jobs, attending events, prodding us along, or forcing us along.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Currently, I am an unemployed person, let go from a company that I was supporting in their transition into a major player in the software industry through agility; reacting the the business economy at large. Short-sightedness by the executive staff curtailed that effort and since, the company has never regained its industry prominence. Most of my staff, and associated staffs either left or were fired much to the detriment of the company need.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I look back at what I taught others, yet for reason unto myself, never quite achieved.
Everyday do three (3) important, priority items to completion. That does not include emails, nor meetings, nor taking breaks.
By evaluating yourself, the work in front of you, the work cojacent to you, customer wants vs. desires, revenue/profitability, your growth, you can find three (3) things that meet the needs of everyone, and still maintain the delivery all items on time and on schedule.
Taking notes — copious notes. But first, whenever someone is taking, listen. Do not think of answers for you will miss important segments of their conversation with you.
And “plan, do, check, act”. I am a believer in W. Edward Deming thought and operations process.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
