Meet Barry Smith

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Barry Smith . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Barry below.

Barry , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I make sure I walk with confidence wherever I go. I take stride in my work and only focus on that. Everyone else’s actions or opinions doesn’t matter, I’m there for the job.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a photographer and the owner of BPICX Photography. I’ve always had a passion for taking pictures since I’ve been a child. Capturing unique moments & making memories for people is something I love doing. So why not use my hobby and go for it. I recently lost my mother 2 years ago and she was my everything. I felt like grief behind that is what pushed me to keep going . Take out my anger and grief on my work – on my edits, on my photos. I am currently working on a couple of setups for Christmas for inside and outside. Also working on expanding my studio space for the better.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My first thing I had to get over was self doubt. People wouldn’t come to you or book you if you’re not worthy to them. You got this. Don’t beat yourself up when you know what you’re doing . The next thing I had to learn was to get over anxiety. Worrying about the next person’s opinion and what they think will never get you anywhere. You have to block everybody out and just focus on your work or craft. The next thing I had to learn was managing my time schedule. Don’t overwork yourself for an extra buck. Takeout time for yourself to just sit and evaluate what you’ve done. Rest and eat before you do any work and afterwards. With these improvements my business has being running smoothly.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
It sounds cliché, but honestly my mom has been my biggest supporter from the start. It like when she passed her spirit has been with me hand to hand and been blessing me so much. When I go visit her grave, I sit and reminisce on the words she would say to me about keep going and don’t stop. I take that in and go hard.
