Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Becca Falborn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Becca, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
It may come as a surprise to people, but, I haven’t always been the most confident person, and honestly even today, I’m not always as confident as I lead on. I think part of my confidence and self-esteem comes from years of nay-sayers and people putting me down, telling me there was “something wrong” with me, I wasn’t “smart” enough, I wasn’t “pretty” enough, I wasn’t “skinny” enough, I was “too young”, I’d never be what I wanted to be, etc. – the list goes on and it took a lot to pull myself out of it and rise above the people who doubted me. I realized that we have to suppress the unsolicited negativity, to make room for all the positivity that can come our way. As I gained more confidence I was able to make the decisions that made ME happy and benefited MY goals, other likeminded people took notice and the negative people started to fade away, allowing me to surround myself with the people who support and lift me up. I have friends and colleagues tell me, “you make me feel more confident in myself by just being around you.” and honestly, that’s the biggest confidence boost right there. The best compliment you could give me is telling me how my energy improves those around me.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I launched my company, Little Bird, in January of 2024. We are a business development, PR, marketing & creative representation company. Prior to, I held the role of an Executive Producer on the post-production side of the advertising industry. Taking my more than a decade of experience in advertising, PR, marketing, business development and sales, Little Bird is focused on cultivating meaningful creative partnerships between agencies & brands with top talent to bring their brand campaigns to life. The goal of Little Bird is to be the problem solver, finding the best solution for clients, matching each project with the best production and post production partners based on the campaign’s unique creative needs.
Our business is simple, it begins with an intro. I pride myself on being an inclusive, eager, connector of people. Project or problem, we have the solution and can connect you with the right solvers, we won’t stop until it’s taken care of. Always excited & passionate about meeting new people; I stay focused on learning about their craft, hearing new ideas, brainstorming creative development, igniting collaboration opportunities, & problem solving.
In college, I dreamed of starting my own company as a long-term goal. Jumping into my career upon graduation; I started as a Production Assistant just two weeks later, quickly excelling. After working on iconic reality TV shows such as Jersey Shore, Snooki & JWoww, and Tattoo Nightmares; I went on to blaze my own path in the advertising industry. Starting out as Client Services & Receptionist for a post production company in 2014; it was then that I learned the value of attending networking events, industry parties and happy hours: to market myself as a staple in the community with everyone I encountered along the way.
From there, I expanded my experience as a Business Affairs Coordinator within an ad agency; then shifted gears back to post production to land the sought after position of Producer. With the opportunity to showcase my skillset, I proved to be an essential powerhouse. Just two years later, I climbed the ladder to Executive Producer, becoming one of the youngest EP’s in the advertising industry at just 28 years old. In 2023, I held two full-time roles as the EP of Business Development for two post production companies, on both East and West coasts, while building Little Bird.
My ability to win business and maintain long-term relationships with clients and creative partners continues to flourish.…with every person I meet, every connection I make, and every project I touch, there is an opportunity to expand the network, as Little Bird. And again, it begins with an intro.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think it’s a combination of all three – quality, skill, and knowledge – that make someone successful and keeps them well rounded. Qualities? Compassion & self-awareness – you have to care about others and truly want to help them. You almost find yourself looking for a way to help someone to gain their trust so they know they can rely on you as an ally & resource. Self-awareness is such a broad quality, which can also be considered a skill, in my opinion. If you aren’t in-tune with who YOU are and amplify your most beneficial self, then others will continue to view you as lacking self-awareness, eventually they catch on to the ignorance and the opportunities will dissipate. Skill? The ability to not take it personally. Everyone is going through their own journey, ups, downs, and sideways, if you will. Someone’s bad day and snippy attitude likely has nothing to do with you, someone’s negative view of you could simply be them projecting their own insecurities. Don’t take it personally. Just keep moving along and don’t dwell. I always say, those who mind don’t matter and those who matter, don’t mind. Knowledge? Well, the knowing art of sales without being sales-y, is more than just having a product someone needs and putting it in front of them. Why do they need what you’re selling? Why should they buy you version over the other one that looks slightly different but is ultimately the same with a different color or font type? Why are YOU unique and necessary for their demand? Once you figure those things out, the rest falls into place.
For people early on in their professional journeys, identify your goal, keep your eyes on the prize, and stay the path. It will have detours, bumps, mountains to climb, flat tires, storms, peaks, valleys, and rivers to cross but that’s what makes the journey so good. You get to look back and think, “Wow, that was all SO worth it,” and it will make you a better leader experiencing everything your journey throws at you. If you find yourself looking back with regret, change your habits. You have to embody the life you want for yourself, and surround yourself with people who are inspiring you with their lives, too.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m overwhelmed (which happens all the time!! It’s normal), I take a step back and unplug for a moment to just reset, I’ll turn my notifications off for 10-15 minutes and either meditate, take a walk with my dog while listening to a calming playlist, or if I’m at defcon-5 level stress, my dad’s getting a call. He’s the best listener, calms me down and helps me reason with how to get back into my tasks with ease. As an over-thinker, sometimes you just need someone to tell you to relax!
