Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Becky Valencia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Becky, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Breaking into the world of finance at just 18, I hadn’t anticipated the obstacles that would come simply from being myself. As a Latina and the only woman of color in many rooms dominated by white men, I quickly discovered that my journey would be different. I was not prepared to feel unheard, overlooked, or dismissed outright. In this world of numbers and strategies, I found I would first need to fight for the right to even be part of the conversations. For nearly three years, I struggled to even find my voice. In meeting rooms, and classrooms, I often sat silently where my ideas and answers were swallowed by louder voices. Then, one moment changed everything.
In a group exercise, my correct answer went unrecognized until the professor asked who had solved the problem correctly. Mustering courage, I raised my hand. That moments showed me the importance of speaking, even when others try to silence you because you look different.
Now, I remind myself constantly of that breakthrough moment, overcoming imposter syndrome each time I step into a room. Today, I help clients build wealth and achieve entrepreneurial dreams, knowing there is power in sharing my voice and empowering others to do the same. There is space in every room for those of us willing to make it – even in place that may not welcome us.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hola, mi gente! As a proud first-generations Latina and finance graduate, daughter of immigrant parents, and dedicated community advocated, my journey has been rooted in service and empowerment. Most of my professional career has been spent with a powerhouse nonprofit organization where I work with a tremendous team building collective power, transform systems and create opportunities for the Latine community. My personal mission is clear: to amplify marginalized voices and expand spaces where we can thrive.
Outside my daily work, I share my knowledge through finance and leadership development presentations, mentor emerging leaders, and address diverse forums to uplift marginalized communities. I believe deeply in the power of growth and transformation- and in the unique journeys we each take to achieve it. Supporting my community, guiding others through challenges and celebrating each win along the way is an honor.
My greatest reward? Watching others find their voices, stepping forward with confidence, and laying the foundations for change within their own communities. Mant of us carry big dreams; sometimes, all we need is a little push to bring them to life!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three areas that were the most impactful were, community advocacy – resource building and inspiring confidence in others. Second, financial literacy – not only using it in my own life but also actively sharing it with community by providing practical knowledge in this area helps others gain independence and the tools to succeed. Last, mentorship and emotional intelligence – meeting others where they are and supporting their journeys is essential to guiding people to find their voices and pursue their dreams.
For folks who are early in their journey, I highly recommend stepping into areas that are uncomfortable, that is where you will find growth. Surround yourself with people who challenge you. As soon as you feel stagnant, go onto your next journey. Through your journey, listen and learn from communities you would like to serve. Volunteer with local organizations and attend community events. Look for opportunities to be mentored and/or take online classes/workshops that expose you to personal finance, budgeting or leadership fundamentals. Most importantly, develop a level of emotional intelligence. Being able to understand others perspectives without judgement, reflecting on your own experiences and challenges help you gain insights that strengthen your ability to relate to others and guide others. Start small, be curious, ask questions, and remain committed to self transformation!
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most powerful gift my parents gave me was the unwavering foundation of faith and love, grounding me in a strength and purpose far beyond myself. Through their countless sacrifices, they not only paved the way for my dreams but also planted within me a deep-rooted belief in Jesus Christ. In moments of struggle, when I felt alone or overwhelmed, they showed me how to lean on God for strength. They reminded me that no matter how heavy the burden, God would be there to lift me up, and I would never have to face anything alone.
Their sacrifices have been humbling. They worked tirelessly, often putting their own dreams aside to see mine through, all the while teaching me the importance of faith, family, and building a legacy for generations to come. They taught me that true success isn’t just personal; it’s about creating opportunities and strength for those who will follow. Their unwavering support, their faith in me, and their reminders of God’s constant presence have inspired me to be resilient, to keep going, and to believe deeply in the potential within myself and others.
I am profoundly grateful for my parents’ love and the values they instilled in me. Every step I take is a tribute to them—a continuation of their dreams, their strength, and their faith. Their love has shown me that with God, I am capable of achieving far more than I could have imagined, and that life’s challenges are simply steps toward a greater purpose.
