Meet Begum Uz

We recently connected with Begum Uz and have shared our conversation below.

Begum, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
Self-care is an important aspect of my personality and career as a whole. I practice self-care routines daily as well as making decisions based on self-care. I don’t like to teach my clients and others the things that I wouldn’t practice myself and self-care is a great example of this.

Years ago, I was going through a very stressful time in my life. I was looking for marketing jobs in Los Angeles and I really struggled with finding one that suited me well. Between the application process, interviews, and cover letters, I found myself extremely overwhelmed and I started biting my nails unconsciously. This quickly became a very controlling habit that took more from my self-esteem. After trying everything to stop biting my nails (i.e. bitter nail polish, frequent manicures), I heard about self-hypnosis. When self-hypnosis becomes a routine, it can really create miracles in your life. I experienced this first hand and I stopped biting my nails with self-hypnosis!

Since that day, the day I learned self-hypnosis, I got into the magical world of hypnosis. It changed my career, my perspective and my career as a whole. I felt more fulfilled, more confident and finally like myself again. This is where the power of daily self-care practice comes from.

Nowadays, I regularly practice self-hypnosis and breathwork. I also work out and walk to give my body the attention it deserves. Finally, I am more careful to set boundaries when it comes to things that will affect my well-being.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a certified hypnotherapist and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) tapping practitioner. I help my clients change their subconscious beliefs, patterns, learned behaviors and suppressed emotions by using hypnosis. When I say hypnosis, you may be thinking about hypnosis stage shows or scary movies but in hypnotherapy, what we do is completely different.

I use hypnosis to create a state of deep physical relaxation, mental calmness, and deep focus, which allows the subconscious mind to be more receptive to new perspectives and changes. During this state, I give my clients positive hypnotic suggestions, stories, or different techniques to help them reach their personal goals.

What excites me most about hypnotherapy is helping my clients release fears and phobias, improve self-esteem, stress relief, past life regression and pain management. The best part about what I do is, it is completely based on the power of the mind and it doesn’t have any side effects. Every time I see my clients changing their lives, it really makes me feel as if my life is changing!

My techniques involve empowering my clients and really helping them remember their core virtues. So when they quit smoking, when they break a habit, or in any other situation; the decision comes from the point of self-love, not a forceful decision.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the qualities that made me the hypnotherapist that I am today are developing a deeper sense of empathy, taking courageous actions and working on constant improvement of my skills. To me, learning and improving myself is a continuous journey.

I recommend others to develop a skill for listening to others. Most of us listen but we don’t hear. When we listen to listen, we can hear the emotions, underlying factors and much more about the person. Additionally, always look for ways to challenge your comfort zone. It will be uncomfortable to leave your comfort zone in the beginning but that’s where the greatness begins.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My biggest challenge is the negative information people have about hypnosis in general. Unfortunately Hollywood movies and stage shows give hypnosis a bad name. After all, no one wants to be controlled or do things they don’t want to do. Because of this barrier, not only do many people miss the chance to benefit from hypnotherapy but also they feel intimidated by the process.

In the networking meetings I attend, sometimes when I say that I am a hypnotherapist, someone will jokingly say “Please don’t turn me into a dog”. I know that they are trying to be funny but this goes to show how little they know about hypnosis and what they believe it to be. It’s a big barrier to reaching more people with hypnotherapy.

I had this challenge since I started my practice as a hypnotherapist. Since then, I try to attend as many networking meetings and social situations to correct what people believe about hypnosis. I also conduct my own classes and workshops to teach various groups about hypnosis and give them a positive hypnosis experience. My goal is to teach as many people as I can about the benefits of hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
