We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Beka Bishop. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Beka below.
Beka, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
One way I keep my creativity alive is by allowing myself to experience life. This means taking breaks, vacations, and mental health breaks. I think there is beauty in finding time to “life” while also “hustling.” At the end of the day, it’s hard to come up with new ideas, content strategies, or even have fruitful conversations if you don’t allow yourself to have a life outside of your job.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a show promoter, social media manager, and artist manager in the music industry. I get to work with a variety of genres and ranges of fame levels.
The most exciting part of my job is that my job revolves around music. I feel truly blessed to get to wake up every day and do what I get to do. I love getting to help artists reach their goals and break down how we’re going to get there.
I have recently launched Fantom Presents – a show promotion company in Nashville, TN. Our intention is to bring music back to Music City by putting on Nashville’s hottest shows based on performance – not just numbers. There’s something to be said when an individual with millions of followers on social media cannot fill a small venue here for a show. My aspects and goals may be a little old school, but I can guarantee Fantom Presents will be a very well-trusted and known name soon.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Trusting myself was the most important thing that I’ve had to learn. Actual skills that have helped me – it truly depends on the job, but I’ve never been mad at myself for being overly organized. I also find that communication can have so many different styles and finding the right way to do it is a complete art within itself.
Therapy has been such a blessing for me. Figuring out the root of some of my traumas so I can work through them has made me an overall better person, but also a fearless leader and teammate. Learning to read a room effectively is so important as well.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
In my particular roles, I think it’s best to be well-rounded. A professor of mine at Full Sail said, “I’d rather be pretty alright at a lot of things than be really f-ing good at one thing.” This always stuck to me especially being multi-interested and also being a creative myself. Find what sets your soul on fire for sure, but don’t be afraid to learn new skills or take on challenges you wouldn’t normally take.
