Meet Bela Fidel

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bela Fidel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bela below.

Bela, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I believe that although we believe we ourselves have found our purpose in life, more often than not it is our purpose that finds us. The still small voice when one is growing up, a veering towards what brings us joy, a deep interest in a specific field that found an echo in us – these are some of the veins that carry blood to our hearts and often shape our lives.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am equally passionate a bout two things: Art and Animals, both domestic and wild. I “fell into art” quite a few decades ago when I painted a couple of very small canvases. That came out of nowhere, without a warning, without a purpose. My uncle had dabbled in painting and my mother was a great “telephone doodler”. I had no desire, ambition or plan to become an artist.

Many years ago I woke up to the plight of animals, their suffering, their exploitation. I started contributing to animal organizations, reading their letters, joining demonstrations against puppy mills, calling and writing to government officials on behalf of bills that would protect animals, etc.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I am an avid reader. By the age of 20 I had read 500 books and I haven’t stopped. Books were a great influence in my life, be they fiction, physics, philosophy, history, biographies. I absorbed so much through books and they have helped me become who I am today. I am intellectually curious and love knowledge.

However, I have not become a writer (yet) but turned out to be passionate about creativity in art.

My advice to anyone who is starting their journey: follow what brings you joy. Be sure to develop your skills, your craft, gain as much knowledge as possible of your chosen field.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I have a special project I am intent on pursuing (but keep procrastinating): create a series of paintings based on Rachmaninoff’s Concerto #2. I would love to collaborate with a musician who loves Rachmaninoff.
