We were lucky to catch up with Belen Gomez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Belen with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Definitely from my family and siblings! Being the youngest and the only girl in my family was fun but they definitely made me strong and taught me that just cause I was “the baby “ of the family I didn’t automatically get what I wanted. So having that always in my head made me work for what I wanted.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a hairstylist/artist based in LA and in Dallas (my home town). I am wanting to spread colorful hair around and educate on ways you can achieve certain colors or looks on different hair textures, face shapes , etc. I am also slowly working up a brand where products and events that I come out with or in the making represent my city , where I grew up in and also just show love to people that have helped me along the way and being artist together in some way.
With that being said I am starting to go back to Dallas every 3 months to rebuild my clientele again after moving to LA for the past 4 years. Miss my hometown and all the familiar faces !
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’ve learned a lot about people and how to treat people being behind the chair. Many hairstylist can agree we can be therapists to our clients. With that being said doing hair for the past 7 and half years you learn how to approach them by there body language and sensitivity. Also learning how to treat them as a friend too not just another $$ in your pocket. I’ve learned this from working in LA. People can be very transactional without even realizing it
Living and working in LA has taught me alot about how nasty people can really be towards each other’s team members. A big learning lesson was how to treat someone that works for you and just your surrounding peers. I was fortunate and unfortunate to work under pressure with certain”a-listers” but also was not treated the best as an assistant.
By me saying I was fortunate and unfortunate going through this experience means although I wasn’t treated with respect at points I still take those experiences and approach someone who is working u see me with respect and value them as a human.
The Fortunate part was learning how to stay cool under pressure , which now if I where to be in a scenario with an “a lister “ or high intensity I can approach it like any other.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I definitely have my dream clients , I mean who doesn’t ! Erykah badu , jhene aiko and Leon bridges are def top 3.
But I would really just love to work with other upcoming creatives in Dallas and in LA. My brother already knows this but his definitely #1 to collab with , since he is a barber in Dallas and specializes in buzzed designs and just sick fades I like mixing that with some bleach and tone or creative color!
