We were lucky to catch up with Bella Glanville recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bella , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
It was the moment that I realised how important self-love is, and that it is a decision you can make at any point. With the click of your fingers, you can decide that you love yourself. You are your first and your last love, and at the end of the day, you’re going to end up with yourself so you may as well make an effort to have a good relationship with yourself or things could get quite awkward. And just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, love, light and radiance are in the eye of the beholder because they all mean the same thing. Loving yourself doesn’t mean accepting how you look or feeling attractive (that comes with self-love anyway). Loving yourself means that you can look in the mirror and choose to be proud of who you are, where you’ve come from, the blueprint of your life that you control. Loving yourself is remembering who loves you, what makes you happy, what makes you proud to be alive. It’s so easy. The moment that I decided to focus on all these things, self-esteem, self-love, self-confidence came with it.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m an actress and a producer. But the funny part is that was never the plan. I received some very good advice once in the acting world: “Always create your own heat.” I took that advice as “Never wait for life to happen to you, make it happen.” Whenever there has been a particular role that I have wanted to play, I have written it for myself. Why? Because I get to fulfil that dream, and others will also see that I am capable of doing that role, which could lead to me being cast in that role. So many of us, in every industry, wait around for things to happen. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of waiting around and complaining that nothing is happening. That is why I became a producer. Writing comes with producing, and producing comes with more acting roles.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Self-confidence
When you walk into a room, within the first two seconds people can make a judgment about you. If you walk into a room with absolute confidence and certainty, people will want to talk to you.
2. Authenticity
Leading on from the above, people actually want to meet the real you. The industry loves personal brands, authenticity and kindness because there’s so little of it going around anymore. If you think something nice about someone, tell them! If you feel competitive or jealous towards someone, remember that speaks more about how you feel about yourself, and instead, focus on how you can become a better version of who you were yesterday.
3. Persistence
This is an industry where you get knocked down every day. I joke that I get ‘professionally rejected’. But it’s important to keep sending those emails, attending those events, making those films and building those contacts. If you want it enough, keep going.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Ever since I got my first job my mum told me that I had to pay for everything myself (house groceries aside). It really taught me the value of money and not to take advantage of it, or be spoilt.
